i used to be a child and subject to the authority of adults, which was exactly like living in Nazi Germany

Yeah. It's irritating. The first thing to get across to people is to pay attention to ownership and control. Who owns the big media outlets? Every single one is owned/controlled by the billionaire and oligarch investor class. News outlets reflect the goals of their owners. All just facts.

also I believe the president can issue a pardon for something even if there have been no federal charges, so Trump could just pardon him right now anyway

generally yes. under normal circumstances state and fed officials coordinate to decide whose trial will proceed first, but the fed govt can't stop the state from charging and trying him

here's a list of a few hundred independent news sources.

the notion that we could turn the NYT left if we could just get enough left writers there is nonsense; the owners of these channels only let you write there because they know it won't do any good. master's tools, master's house, etc. 2/2

because all the "high level media positions" are at the platforms owned by the oligarchs, who do not want a well-informed populace and are happy to platform folks who will perpetuate the culture war (to avoid the class war we desperately need). 1/2

"of note" presumably means "of significant size and reach". but reaching a larger audience is useless if it's through a channel controlled by the power elite. not to mention that it supports them financially.

the core complaint that underlies all others is that the NYT is owned by the very billionaire oligarchs you oppose. publishing there helps them. even if they publish something they truly oppose, being in the NYT alongside the rest of their pro-billionaire propaganda nullifies its impact.

I need to check my notes but I do believe there are media outlets besides Bluesky and the New York Times

but isn't there another forum you could write for that isn't owned by the billionaire oligarch class? if your nyt column's point is "don't read the nyt" then that seems self-defeating

right? I'm shocked— shocked!—that "centrist" pundits employed by billionaires are taking aim at a platform that hosts a large anti-billionaire community.
comment in response to

Now recontextualize this thread in the light of "how many of these centrist pundits are employed by the billionaire oligarch class". there's not much value in grappling with disingenuous arguments that a person only makes because they are paid to

Beehiiv is a typical VC-funded, labor-exploiting for profit company. It's fundamentally no better than Substack, it just hasn't had a public Nazi moment yet. Ghost.io is a nonprofit, and its software is open source. You can use their platform or host it yourself.

i look forward to several days of fascists posting obviously photoshopped images to try to prove attendance was high, while everyone else sighs and points at the reams of video evidence proving it wasn't

yes, the real problem is powerless members of the public being condescending, and not the country descending into fascism. "you better be polite when you talk back to the boot on your neck" <- you

Slate is owned by the Graham Holdings company, a public company owned and controlled by oligarchs and billionaires. I am shocked—shocked!—that Slate is posting anti-Bluesky screeds. Know who owns your news; get your news from independent sources. blog.barrayar.org/2025/02/18/w...

legacy media is all owned by the billionaire investor class. very little of what they put out qualifies as journalism. so yeah, we can have their corporate PR/propaganda exist alongside actual journalism, but why would we want to?

what's the Tom-Homan-bitch total??
comment in response to

those outlets do that because they're owned by oligarchs who don't want to take strong stances. the only path is to deny them funds, by not subscribing to them or visiting their websites (ads). and teach all your friends that they should know who owns their news. blog.barrayar.org/2025/02/18/w...

NYT is owned by the billionaire investor class. They do not want a well-informed populace. Do not give NYT your money (either directly via subs or indirectly via ads/page views). Support independent journalism instead.

labels are just shorthand but shouldn't be used as immutable in meaning, or as cudgels. we believe in democratic rule at all levels of power (both political and economic), cooperation not domination, and that us-vs-them is a myth. so whatever the label is for that.

I'm not sure Terry Moran's employment at ABC was doing us much good. ABC (like all TV "news") is owned and controlled by the oligarch investor class, and they do not want a well-informed public.

he seems to be unaware of the saying "the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house." the powerful (and their Renfields) tell you to use the proper channels if you want change, because they control those channels and are confident you won't suceed.
