I wonder what the thought is behind that. Are they just so used to seeing it upright that seeing it sideways twigs something in that furry little head? And what drives them to set it back as opposed to leaving it?

Nonviolent action has, historically, had a *higher* chance of achieving their stated goals than armed uprising (as noted by Erica Chenoweth and Maria J Stephan).
But that doesn't mean playing nice.
Apply pressure through political, economic, social, legal, and other means. Be relentless.
