Judge Susan Illston of the Northern District of CA issues the below order. It pauses all RIF-related actions across the gov’t for two weeks, because she concludes that these RIFs likely illegally usurp Congress’ authority by reorganizing agencies. Hearing in 2 wks to consider a prelim injunction.

Thank you for the support ❤️ ghastly is the right word. (I will be OK, personally. But science and medicine will not 😢)

While this administration sows fear and isolation, our union stands up for hope and solidarity. Standing together, we will not be intimidated. When we fight, we win. ✊

On Wednesday, we planned to lead a walkout at his first town hall. We wanted to send a message: we will not sit by while our Director aids and abets the dismantling of America's crown jewel research enterprise. Seems he got wind of our plans, because he postponed last-minute.

…On the contrary, in the past month, critical NIH facilities received stop work orders, 2200 contractors were terminated, a second round of RIFs hit, and the funding cuts continued.

I've left the news cycle for like a week (to try to push some grants out) and I can't even begin to catch up, already

I don't :( Was planning a TR01 myself. I should add: this list comes from a trustworthy source, but it is NOT a public declaration by NIH. Might change. I'm not sure what to expect. It's really irritating that this admin is saying "innovation" yet axing all of these programs that support innovation

Right? The incompetence is so deep that they aren't even competent at their destruction. 285M deaths: at what point did the "ounce of common sense" light bulb not go off? Jeeze, they're REALLY bad at this

Oops opioid OD (i.e., opioid overdose death), not ID. Wish Bluesky would let us edit posts

Ugh all around. It's impossible. That is a terrible situation + I'm so sorry to hear it. When I think of how this adds up w/ most citizens struggling for care... more ugh. THESE are the problems that need solving. Not 0.3% savings by permanently crushing STEM in America, I mean come ON...

My husband is the stay-at-home caregiver, which helps. He does dentist and endo; I do PCP, eye doc + behav health. But w kids aged 8-14, diff schools, sports, littlest too young to be left home alone, it's tough. We are so privileged w 1 parent home, cant imagine how difficult if dual income house

Few things that make me see red more than this. Central MA is a medical desert. Very difficult to get med care here. What will happen as the fed govt continues demolishing hospitals + med schools across the nation? I can tell you: care will not get cheaper or easier for *anyone* in this country 5/5

In addition to thinking neurologist give talk therapy, >50% of providers listed on our insurance as accepting new patients are definitely, 100% NOT accepting new patients. I have spent literally hundreds of hours (not exaggerating) over 3 yrs trying to find behav health providers 4/5

Also, enjoy the fact that there is literally not a SINGLE behavioral health provider w approp expertise in-network within a 50 mile radius. Try arguing that with the insurance company (oh I have) because they insist on labeling anyone with a neuro affiliation a behav health provider! Yay!! 3/5

My kids are medically complicated in simple ways. One has an eye condition req'ing surgery. Three share an endocrine issue. At base, this is ~20 specialty dr. visits/yr, WITHOUT illness. Worcester providers = $75/visit bc they're out of network. This math is fun, isn't it? 2/5

In a hundred small and large ways, universities pour money into taxpayer investment into research, often matching or exceeding each government dollar spent, which eventually pays dividends for the US public in terms of public health, technology available, quality of life, etc.
comment in response to post
If the US conducted this research themselves exclusively in national labs (which we also do to a lesser extent), it would mean the only dollars spent on research would be those spent by taxpayers. Instead, universities amplify and subsidize national research spending, to the benefit of all.

Thank you for your time today! I feel it so important for people to understand how science funding works in our country ❤️

Research teaches us about: -how misinformation spreads; -how health information does NOT reach those who need it most; -how science education fails or succeeds; -how museums can reach audiences; -how to communicate conservation science w/farmers, etc. 10/
