Oh many of them can afford it. They just make bigger profits if they can cut costs.
It's more a demand-side issue: if people are willing to accept what passes today for news, that's what they'll get.
Happily, many aren't, and the channels do exist to supply that market.

We are once again stuck in this fake UK-US trade deal debate where both sides are happy to have a deal as long as they don't actually offer anything difficult. Which the US might be able to get away with but the UK almost certainly can't.

I agree, but referendums aren't forever. We've had close to a decade of (pretty wretched) Brexit reality. The world is changing fast. It's ever clearer it was a strategic and economic blunder. And there's a good chance we could now reshape the EU more in line with our way of thinking.
