My college Medieval History prof was a dour, real-politik German guy. I still remember how he summed up why brutal empires fell: "The next guy didn't have the stomach for it."
I think a lot of tech-guy Robber Baron fortunes will be given away by heirs coz they won't have the stomach for it.
