Doctors routinely lose hours in the day to laptops that take 15 minutes to boot and crash four times a day. Patient recording sharing is *abysmal* (anyone with a relative who needs help from multiple consultants will be all too aware) and compounds health issues. And it’s just all…ignored.

Good thread here. I was very opposed to universal ID back in the noughties, but have since come round to it being sensible (not least, as Rob says, because we now have phones etc that document our every move).

The other side of Upton Sinclair's quote "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it."

Long stretches of unsupervised time. Print pornography left in remote places. An inability to get factual answers to your questions. Everyone smoking everywhere, all the time. Bizarre pastimes born of true boredom. Long stretches of screen-free time. Going to the library nearly every day.

the British press has always been terrible

It isn't possible to design a school system where everyone leaves with the skills needed for the workplace because *they're all going to do different jobs*. Workplace training needs to be done by employers.

If legislators want to take on AI, this awful insidious stuff is where to look. Incredibly dangerous.

This looks really interesting: Rogue One recut and rescored in the style of a three-episode Andor arc that moves “its energy from emulating the jaunty, swashbuckling [original trilogy] to more in line with its prequel show’s feel”. [fanedit.org]

The right pretends you can fix public finances and services by cracking down on freeloaders, the left that a tax on the rich will do it. Both are dishonest. As is “efficiency savings”/“cutting down on waste”.

Internet Roadtrip is my favorite thing on the internet right now—it’s basically Twitch Plays Google Street View. They started in Boston, spent several weeks on a quest to cross the Canadian border, and are now exploring New Brunswick. neal.fun/internet-roa...

Republican officials have now asked us to disregard material things, sacrifice for the nation, and contemplate that death is inevitable. We have been taken over by a secret cadre of militant Buddhists.

One for the quiz questions. The link between cathedrals and city status was broken in 1889. Nowadays, just because a place has a cathedral it doesn’t mean it’s a city. And just because a place is a city, it doesn’t mean it has a cathedral.

Approximately as useless as any film's description on Netflix.

Today is National Biscuit Day, and it’s about time that I populated this account with biscuit (cookie) sets from the past few years. Here are some of my favourites. 🧵 First up, a set inspired by the delicious designs of William Morris and John Henry Dearle.

Ok so I didn’t really need that in my adult beverage but thanks for sharing

I am disappointed in the AI discourse steveklabnik.com/writing/i-am...

also just quite funny and bleak to watch all the mainstream headline news on video games when every gamer I know (myself heavily included) has spent a lot of the past year being head over heels obsessed with Balatro, a cheap-as-chips looking game made by literally one (1) random bloke

the reporter who asked trump about "TACO" did the right thing but also probably caused a global economic depression

Trump has finally heard what TACO means (Trump Always Chickens Out) - credit @robarmstrong.bsky.social). He will surely choose the worst possible dumb decision to refuse to chicken out of, and we'll all have to blame Rob for the fallout.

Bouteflika but a superpower.

Solemn occasion as, in the face of a threatening America, King Charles attends the opening session of Canada's parliament and so of course Justin Trudeau has worn his best Adidas Gazelles.

Something the replies I got yesterday made clear to me was that there are a lot of people who have a guy they're mad at all the time at in their heads, and if you say something that challenges what they think, you become that guy and they talk at you as though you have all of his characteristics

If someone asked me this question in a meeting, with the stated goal of being productive, I would walk out www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

One of my favorite facts about the Cyrillic alphabet is that it's named after Cyril of Byzantium, a guy who invented a completely different alphabet called Glagolitic

Good and interesting thread.

Boy everyone on here is even grumpier then normal today

ok I worked for a social platform that grew juuuuust enough to get sold before dying (and then got mashed up into TikTok along with other acquired apps) so I think I have some expertise relevant to the “why is Bluesky losing active users” conversation I can’t see all the metrics but…
