I’ll give it a whirl.

You’re going to make me google Alex Graham because I have no idea who Alex Graham is.

Don’t work for a company who can’t be bothered to pay their junior designers more than what you’d get working at Dunkin Donuts. If you want the degree & experience, pay for it.

I haven’t had anything new for a while that is self published. The rule of thumb is if one hasn’t had anything new in 5 years, you’re starting over. So the new comic is going to be black & white. With a color cover that isn’t the 2nd heaviest stock you can run through a copier.

Zine making is its own kind of animal but with comics, you want to spark that relationship with readers at an easy entry point. That means making at least one or a few comics at an attractive price point that is more in the $10 or less price range & not in the $20-$30 price range for the same thing.

If I was starting out, the last thing I would do is go out swinging with an expensive Riso only comic or a full color comic with all the bells & whistles of a Fantagraphics book. You’re then left to charge $10 plus for a 24 page comic one can read in 5 minutes. That’s insane.

I had Hank’s bbq after. Brisket was passable. The mac was disappointing. The collard greens were similar to City bbq but I actually liked Hank’s better.

There’s comic tropes and Inkpulp podcast. They both have mail in episodes. Inkpulp will usually show off what they got in the mail during the live sketch shows. They’re not daily like Kayfabe was.

What has definitely happened? Shows where the only link is off a social media post to a Google form. Stop it. Just stop it. Squarespace isn’t that expensive. Fuck!

I haven’t forgotten to double back and check a link out but dude, c’mon.

There is a huge stack of photos too that lay testament to the fact my art skills didn’t come from either parent. Jesus, 75% of them are out of focus & or the film was left in the camera all year. Zapruder quality. Could be my brother or maybe it’s Bigfoot.🤷🏼‍♂️

It came as a shock as it was kept private. Which is 100% fine. We all deal with this sort of thing differently. He was doing what he loved.

Ugh. Sad to hear that.

Last tip but I quickly became a brush guy. In doing so, I have a wet paper towel on my drawing table. Take your dry brush & reactivate the flow by rolling it on the wet towel before you dip it in the ink. Smooth lines right from the jump.

Favorite ink is either sumi ink (green bottle. Not sure of the company as it’s in Japanese) or koh-I-noor. Dr. Marten’s Black Star is a nice black but it’s acrylic based. I fall in the category of one who doesn’t always clean my tools or I push it too far.

It should be obvious but I wouldn’t use the same nib/nib holder for black India ink. Because of possible cross contamination. Any acrylic based media will be impossible to clean if you’re not great with always cleaning your tools.

When I last was screwing around with gouache, the reproduction was great but the frustrating thing was if the paint ever got wet again, it would shift color. Acrylic gouache doesn’t have that problem so I’m playing with that to see how I can push it around.

I’ve met and come to know a lot of the folks from the Kayfabe group. You get the full picture. There was an online and offline version of Ed. Multiple people have come forward to debunk the claims. So indie comics lost the best hype man they’ve had in years.

The internet isn’t journalism. It’s messy. Something pops up and people automatically see things in black & white with little to no nuance or background. Being algorithm driven partly explains the political mess we’re in now.

Navigating this was surreal. Not sure how I did it but I did. It’s also firmed up how I view things: grieving, mental health, religion, etc.

In a weird way, dealing with her brain cancer was a cake walk compared to the suicidal depression. Don’t confuse things, the cancer was hard too.

According to the doctors timeline, I should be past this & in recovery by sometime in mid August. 🤷🏼‍♂️ My first treatment is this Wednesday. I’m guessing because they don’t want to start this on April Fools Day.

Typical brain drain situation like most small towns outside major cities. People want change but politically, things haven’t changed in years.

I will never start doing a pre-sale or a Kickstarter till a book is all the way finished. I did do some shopping around last year for a printer. All my self published stuff are short runs in a zine/floppy format.

Sort of funny but it reminded me of the time Prince went by the symbol & had to be mentioned as the artist formerly known as Prince. That’s my tumor name. Not sure why it can’t be easy like ‘Stan’ or ‘Bill’.
