its crazy how dominant germany was in science (especially chemistry) in the 19th century, it was basically the international language for scientists, people came from all over the world to train at heidelberg etc, and then....

Yeah; this isn’t deportation it’s exile, or rendition, or disappearing or kidnapping. If the government forcibly relocates a citizen or relocates a non-citizen to somewhere other than where they came from, it’s not deportation. It would still be wrong even if it were deportation, but words matter.
