"Collateral arrests are when ICE has a warrant to arrest a person but when they arrive, they might encounter additional ppl, relatives or co-workers & arrest them. Being undoc. is a civil offense-not criminal-so arrests include ppl with no criminal backgrounds www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Cuts have consequences, illustrated. As seen on TV 📺

Delighted to see that this issue of American Behavioral Scientist is now out. My thanks to @drernestocast.bsky.social and Mirjam KĂĽnkler for coediting this issue and inviting me to be a part of it. Their papers are excellent, as are Chares Demetriou's and Mona El-Ghobashy's.

On how immigrants commit less crimes, why the border is safe, why taxing remmitances is a bad idea, and why immigrants use less welfare and social programs than non-immigrants. www.blueskryb.cloud/book/link/97...

These people are deranged and danegerous because they have billions of dollars and influence.

The Supreme Court lifted a lower-court order that kept humanitarian parole protections in place for more than 500k migrants from four countries: Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua & Venezuela. It also allowed the admin to revoke temporary legal status from about 350k Venezuelan migrants in another case.

NEW Special Issue coedited by Mirjam Künkler and me in honor of #CharlesTilly is now published. Papers by Toloudis, Demetrious, El-Ghobashy & the editors. My paper sketches a general theory of democratization and social change:  https://f.mtr.cool/pdmktcaqbp

In the 1980s, a group of US religious activists helped people fleeing political persecution in El Salvador & Guatemala. James Cobert would call it a “pro bono coyote operation; the activists would help Salvadorans cross into the US, & hide them in homes & churches” @jonathanblitzer.bsky.social

The State Department is creating an Office of Remigration. "Remigration is an immigration policy embraced by extremists that calls for the removal of all migrants—including “non-assimilated” citizens—with the goal of creating white ethnostates in Western countries" www.wired.com/story/trump-...

"it feels like our world has been thrown off its axle," Guillermo, the oldest son of Jessica Flores Marin. The toll on the family has been overwhelming. She missed her daughter's soccer & banquet, her son's high school graduation. Spent her birthday in ICE custody www.newsweek.com/jessica-flor...

Important story, many innocent people still detained unlawfully.

There are no shortcuts to improving government agencies in a democracy. One must first understand how the government actually operates & then work w Congress to enact reforms. Government works very differently from a corporation; only the US churches & Harvard Corporation are older than the US gov.

What Does It Mean to Provide Sanctuary?  by Ernesto Castañeda, PhD. Director of CLALS and the Immigration Lab, American University Photo Credits to Jeff Haynes/AFP/ Getty Images in "Churches have a long history of being safe havens — for immigrants and others." The term "sanctuary" dates back to…

"mass deportation architect-in-chief Stephen Miller berated immigration officials for not being brutal enough in their mass deportation; demanded they quadruple the number of arrests. Miller left some “feeling their jobs could be in jeopardy if the new targets aren't reached” @tusk81.bsky.social

"The administration has this campaign promise and this ideological desire for mass deportations. How can they do it? The campaign said it was going to deport those who were committing crimes. In reality, immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants, commit far fewer crimes than citizens...

Beware of promises after deportation! Con cuidado al aceptar "programas" de autodeportaciĂłn! #NoticiasCaracol youtu.be/cIpNP5mw3Ow?...

Real growth during the Reagan admin. was around 3.55% yearly vs. 2.3% during the Obama yrs. Could this be because Reagan regularized (amnesty) over 3 million people; while Obama deported over 3 million people (mainly working-age men)? 3 million pple was around 1% of the population [227 to 320 mill.]

#StandingWithAllUniversities https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK-Hs49x7Es

International students contribute much to American universities, companies, and society. They contributed $44 billion to the U.S. in 2023-2024. The exchange of ideas from people of different backgrounds increases innovation. As Fanta Aw, Executive Director of NAFSA, tells WaPo: wapo.st/4jq6rbx

Many good points here from @crampell.bsky.social about the #BeautifulBill4Billionaires including the discussion on immigration in the last segments. youtu.be/nIB-8dvkL8I?...

"Concentration camps involve the mass detention of civilians without any real trial outside the existing legal system, usually on the basis of race, religion, or political affiliation. This kind of detention typically results from who the detainees are rather than any criminal action they’ve taken"

The ones at the top are, therefore, the easiest groups to target for insecure individuals and opportunistic politicians.

Exclusion creates real inequities. But the perception of categorical discrimination is subjective. Members of the majority group may see discussing discrimination & policies aimed to reduce it as "discriminating" against them. A defense mechanism to refuse change & keep a higher status without guilt

In previous years, anti-immigrant voices spoke against asylum claims at the border saying that most immigrants don't show to their court dates [most DO]; now ICE apprehends people undergoing immigration petitions and processes after their court hearings or when checking in with ICE! wapo.st/4mvhLpi
