I have just braved repotting my giant monstera to a 70cm pot. 🤞for survival! Mammoth task.

Rhododendron already fading, since this was taken at the start of the week but still a blooming week.

Final summer planting in or ready for the morning, after a productive work day. Almost perfect Friday involves new selection from tbr pile & a new gin.

Horror seems an odd choice in the sunshine but fabulous read, as ever. @fitzcarraldoeds.bsky.social always deliver

Planting paused, gin poured and book open, in the evening sun trap of my garden. Hard to beat.

Habemus papam

My bliss.

Pope Francis, 1936-2025.

He is risen

That hit very differently as a woman of a certain age!

Been saving this as a treat, needed this week. Huge fan of authors & texts @fitzcarraldoeds.bsky.social have introduced to my regular rotation. The Books of Jacob is one of two books for hols next week. A further 1kg of luggage will go to Ducks Newburyport or To Paradise, plus Kindle. #BookSky

I never saw The Thorn Birds, but I listened to my mother rave about it for years. Discovered on streaming tonight... I'm not sure we can read it as anything but disturbing in 2025. ☹️ Watching Barbara Stanwyck & Jean Simmons chew scenery is a treat though.

As a family, we said goodbye to 14yrs 8 mths of Molly today. She went from being my v. bold puppy to my late uncle's best friend, after I left home for UK. She became the goodest girl. Never met a tennis ball did didn't love or a meat. Belly rubs from Anthony now, in a better place. #Dogs #Labrador

@bertsbooks.bsky.social I'm at 4 of 6 on this & want to hit the 5th and 6th! Could you get Fundamentally & The Persians into the shop for me to collect? Ta

Another astonishingly good read, in a month populated by many incredible books. @garrettcarr.bsky.social's The Boy from the Sea reminds me of Donal Ryan & Claire Keegan, in capturing the complexity of emotion masked by the taciturn bent of rural Ireland. Run to @bertsbooks.bsky.social to buy this.

Apposite read in a week when pondering Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's reflections on Neruda via Seamus Heaney: 'The world's reality will not go unremarked.'

Just shy of 3 years since we said a last goodbye to beloved uncle, Anthony. Sadness as permanent grave marker went up this week, but coming joy as the little blonde in this cherished family pic will welcome a daughter soon, making me an aunt. #Loss #Life

I think I might need to underline passages & sit with The Garden Against Time. Reflections on #paradise are thought-provoking. Bert told me over Wood Street brekkie that this one has excellent spredges. Photo please @bertsbooks.bsky.social, as I pondering double purchase!

Yet another cracker of a recommendation from @bertsbooks.bsky.social. A page turner with real psychological insight into toxic relationships. In my top 3 so far this year, in a month of some real corkers. I'll be in soon for the rest of author's back catalogue! #BookSky

An evening with the incomparable Rowan Williams...audiobooks are not a format I always have patience for, as I read more quickly, but there are times when slowing down is valuable. Loving The Garden Against Time, based on Ch 1.

Booking @hayfestival.bsky.social for 2025 this week... think it has to be Friday 30th May. #BookSky Glorious mix of literature, poetry & politics in the day I'm planning.

Exquisite, as ever. Such compelling characterisation & deftness of touch. Have missed literature *THIS* good. #Books #Readers

Thought-provoking day in #Cardiff, between Streic! at the National Museum, cataloguing the miners' strike & a 1936 take on the Merchant of Venice. #Community #Culture #Art #WorkingClassRoots drive my politics & ethic

Yet another great night of theatre from the front row @nationaltheatre.org.uk. Clever, funny and moving, with fantastic performances & staging. In the company of my oldest best friend! #LongfordWomen #InsideJoke

#HarryClarkeStudios windows in #Longford's St Mel's Cathedral, restored after the 2009 fire are still glorious too

I think this is the first time I've seen my place of work named in a novel! #AHRC #UKRI

Excuse to look for something as gaeilge for the niece joining our lives this year. 🤍

Book of the month so far, Nesting, from another Irish author with the ability to communicate deep emotion with astonishing economy of language. Very real and very moving. Less impressed by the M&S custard cream Easter egg, which is just confusing!

Half a Yellow Sun is in my top 50 books of all time & I loved Americanah so I cannot wait to pick up Dream Count on Friday. Reviews are stunning. #BlueSkyBooks #Readers

Booking Conor McPherson's Brightening Air @oldvictheatre.bsky.social, takes me back to seminal theatre experience: The Weir at Dublin's Gate, as stand in +1 for aunt. Treated to Chapter One supper, 2 years out of school & 6 mths into first job, I decided that was the way to live & experience art!

I love a good reliquary. Niche interest, I know!

Very pleased this morning to find my erstwhile #ASNaC colleague David Callander making #AHRC news for in the Guardian. Early poems about Merlin portray him as environmentalist, say scholars www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

– W. E. B. Du Bois, born #OnThisDay in 1868.

I'm blaming, as ever, @bertsbooks.bsky.social for advertising the best of the 'just published' books! Spent last night with this and going for a second reading now, it was just *that* good.

Maxine Peake on stage in Doubt: A Parable? Yes, please. In the very intimate Ustinov of @theatreroyalbath.bsky.social? Double yes.
