Tonight! Join us at #IAGLR25 for a screening of the documentary @alltooclearfilm.bsky.social . Featuring cutting-edge underwater drones, filmmakers explore how quadrillions of tiny invasive quagga mussels are re-engineering the ecosystem of the Great Lakes. Tickets: https://bit.ly/4kcN7j2

"What's a religion talk doing at a science conference?" poses Katie Grosh of Yale Divinity School - and answers it by saying faith communities are places of trust and deep engagement where conversations about water science can tie into faith traditions #IAGLR25

Sarah @dralgaegirl.bsky.social asked “do we have an easy way to get quality analytics off social media, similar to how Tweetdeck used to work?” Any #scicomm folks have any ideas? Any programmers out there?! #IAGLR25 #greatlakessci

. @mtwiss.bsky.social kicks us back up in the misinformation /disinformation #scicomm session with approaching challenging conversations with polarized audiences using the non-violent communication approach #IAGLR25

Hey #IAGLR25 - @drfishsg.bsky.social wants more followers! also come check out our #SciComm session today until 3pm in room 207!

A man who needs no introduction: @drfishsg.bsky.social of Wisconsin Sea Grant on using humor to do #scicomm. He also says that he has never received fish questions from random people off the street, which is something that obviously needs to change #IAGLR25

Sumeep Bath of IISD Experimental Lakes Area might win Best Title of #IAGLR25: "What Ryanair, Addison Rae and Viral Cat Videos Can Teach Us About Effective Science Communication"

Kicking off the #IAGLR25 misinformation/disinformation and #scicomm discussion is session co-chair @wildlifebiogal.bsky.social setting the stage by talking about the challenges science communicators are facing

It's #Fishmas in July (er, June) at #IAGLR25! 🎄🐟 Come out to N207A this morning for the #scicomm symposium "Creating Resilience in Science Communication in the Age of Misinformation" - I'll be talking at 9 AM CT on what #25DaysofFishmas can teach us about using social media for communication.

I will definitely take a rain cheque on this week's #SundayFishSketch. Here's an off-theme madtom.

Two old sketches for this weeks topic "bioflurescent". I'm working on a new one, but I am still trying to figure out how to do the pattern of a ray. #SundayFishSketch

#sundayfishsketch — it’s not off theme, I was personally bioluminescing while I was sketching.

Didn’t have time for a #SundayFishSketch this week because I was at the 2025 NANFA convention. But I did crochet this American Eel for the convention auction.

Improving & protecting the health of the #GreatLakes is a shared responsibility. We need a multi-nation approach to science, policy and pollution prevention. www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

It seems like everyone is doing the biofluorescence in the Teleostei!! Snooks! Bonefish! Barracuda! Sculpins! Flounders! Cichlids??? Loricariids?? Congrats to @emilycarr.bsky.social @lampichthys.bsky.social @karlycohen.bsky.social @jmhuie.bsky.social et al. on their new paper! #SundayFishSketch 🐡🦑🧪

To celebrate the start of Pride Month, here are some Pride rainbow trout! Happy Pride everyone! #SundayFishSketch

Celebrating #Pride and the #SundayFishSketch all at once—Happy Pride, all! #SciArt #Pride2025

For this #SundayFishSketch I present a Bluefish. Bluefish are a fairly cosmopolitan salt water species. This is in charcoal of course. Might try a biofluorescent fishy later.

Under the administration's proposed budget, Sea Grant - which is within NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research - would be completely zeroed out. Not surprising given that the administration did the same in 2017, but still a gut punch.

Apologies for missing the last few weeks for themes! In light of our new article www.nature.com/articles/s41..., the #Sundayfishsketch #Fishytheme is biofluorescent fishes! #sciart 🦑

Fish At Pretty Good Place In Its Life Right Now theonion.com/fish-at...

The Alabama bass is a great fish, in its native waters. It grows fast & thus is a favorite of tournament anglers. As such, it is often dumped into new waters illegally. Non-native Alabama bass have become a major threat to native fishes, especially other bass species. Don’t move fish!

One visible impact of the illegal firing of NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL) employees - no 2025 data updates for water quality in W Lake Erie, meaning no public info on the harmful algal blooms. We detected toxins in April, but we lost the folks who organize & report this data

Hijacking @aqcrobial.bsky.social's excellent recommendations for #IAGLR25 in Milwaukee to add some of my own: Sticky Rice Brady Street (Thai and Laotian food) Kopp's Frozen Custard Purple Door Ice Cream Milwaukee Public Market Glorioso's Italian Market

I love weird fish, I really do 🐟 #mermay #sketchbook #art #traditionalart

A little late, but finished a least darter for #SundayFishSketch! The mating displays of this species may not be as intense as some other darters, but males of this species still develop bright red blotches on their fins!

A late #sundayfishsketch, the Redfin Shiner. These small fish are native to southern Iowa and grow about 3” long. Their color is brightest during spawning when they turn a bright steel blue and their fins redden. It is a popular baitfish. #sciart #scicomm #fish #watercolor

There are still a few spots left in my *free* Sci-Comedy workshop! No experience necessary - just come have fun and be goofy for 2 hours #IAGLR25 iaglr.org/iaglr2025/pr...

Redband Trout for #SundayFishSketch while sitting near the Columbia gorge and looking at Mt Adams.

Been playing with some variations of my linocut from last #SundayFishSketch! #sciart

Think it's close enough to Sunday for a charcoal rendering of a grass carp being all grass carpy. #SundayFishSketch

flyin fish (2023)

This month’s #NearbyNature2025 sketch is of the Blackspotted Topminnow (Fundulus olivaceus), a small freshwater fish commonly found near the surface of small creeks and streams in the central-southeastern U.S. #wildlife #alabama #fish #sciart

My weekend showing friends around arts and food was filled with flying fish motifs, so here's a margined flyingfish 黑鰭鬚唇飛魚 Cheilopogon cyanopterus for my #TaiwanFishes #台灣魚類 #SundayFishSketch. Flying fish are a cultural staple for some of Taiwan's Indigenous peoples. 🦑🐡🧪

I finally finished my painting of my golden tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps), for #SundayFishSketch! These fish have a unique burrowing behavior and their age of sexual maturity has been significantly impacted by overfishing.

Sometimes you just need a weird lungfish to break up your timeline:
