The Stephen Katz R01 has been expired early. This was a critical funding opportunities for early stage PIs to foster taking their talents to new, big, important problems. Why?

Just got news that @hhmi.org decided to not review Hanna Gray fellowship applications. I am sorry but that’s fucked up. People spent months working in those. So now you disadvantaged these candidates even more. They could have used the time to advance their research instead.

Ok y'all false alarm, I went into work and turduckened my work computer to log in to my home computer and was able to get imaris to display properly. Weird glitch - absolutely no idea what happened.

Just in case anyone else has had this niche experience: Can't see Imaris display on a computer with a floating license I'm remoting into from home. It's just a white screen. Feels like a security update? (I've been able to do this in the past).

ACTION ITEM-----ACTION ITEM Implementation of Schedule F This is what a lot of us have been worried about. This allows for many civil service positions to replaced with political appointees. This could include NIH institute directors and even POs. BUT THERE IS A COMMENT PERIOD... 1/n

🧵🧪”Paying taxes can feel like money lost. In truth, it is money shared. When we fund the NIH, we are betting on ourselves and on one another. We are saying that every American life is worth saving, whether that life sits next door or across the country.”

Hey @drlizhaynes.bsky.social Thanks for representing! (Not tattooed myself but respect the art of self expression :)) www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Your yearly reminder to acknowledge the core facilities you use and their staff scientists in your papers. These scientists are a crucial part of the scientific ecosystem and to continue to exist they need tangible credit for their work. Plus their associated expertise adds credibility to your work.

We're tracking the number of international students whose visas have been revoked by the State Department. We've confirmed over 300 so far and there are likely many more. Get in touch if you've got information you'd like to share with us www.insidehighered.com/news/global/...

Kate is incredible!! You will learn so much and have a ton of fun.

🚨 Not a drill: NSF GRFP results are NOW OUT!!!!! But...good news and bad news. 👍 I'm *thrilled* for the grad students for whom getting this award will be life-changing, esp now. 👎 # of fellowships went down by 51% (1000 this year vs. 2036 last year) See here: www.research.gov/grfp/Awardee...

me waiting for RFAs to drop as a new PI watching my ESI status dwindling.

U Chicago taking a reasonable approach to the chaos in graduate student admissions for next fall.

Just confirmed with the Dean's office that this is accurate and that they are fielding many protests from students and faculty. I am extremely disappointed.

Welp, i got halfway through the RPPR and then received notice the MOSAIC program, and thus my MOSAIC R00 has been terminated. Thank you to those who made this program. Thank you to the other #NIHMOSAIC fellows have supported me through my faculty journey and continue to inspire me.

Very pleased to see these PIs have been reinstated and thank you to @thetransmitter.bsky.social for covering this story - kudos to those at NIH who figured out the error and fixed it. Glad this important research will be continuing! www.thetransmitter.org/science-and-...

Finally got the notice. Very sad day for the MOSAIC program that supported some of the most amazing scientists I know, as well as some of the awesome people on my lab.

Wisconsin: not for sale

Hearing from all corners of HHS this morning about a total bloodletting — firings of scientists, analysts and many more as delayed RIFs take effect. Many folks didn’t see early AM email and showed up, only to be turned away when badges didn’t work. Was sent this photo of long lines at one HHS site.

New this evening (3/28): Major update in NIH grant termination numbers. ❌ 695 NIH grants now terminated (up from 429) ❌ 232 on HIV/AIDS ❌ 44 on cancer ❌ 28 on Alzheimer's ❌ 123 on Covid* *And this doesn't count cancelled non-NIH Covid grants. HUGE THANKS to @noamross.net for pushing the updates!

Funding curves for K and F mechanisms (Warning: the new F mechanism "curve" is a lot)

Roundtable this Wed at the US Senate, on how Trump and Musk are killing research like cancer and Alzheimer’s research. 2:30pm Eastern. There is a livestream. This would be better in primetime and produced for TV, like the Jan 6 Committee did. But it’s a good start from @baldwin.senate.gov.

The list of terminated NIH grants is growing. Now 14 pages (was 6 pages last week).

🧵Yesterday, I received notice that my #NIH grant, on the social environment, lifecourse, epigenetics & #birthoutcomes in Black families, was terminated. This grant represented a critical effort to address the ⬆️ rates of maternal & infant mortality in the US, particularly among Black mothers & babies

I was invited, for July, to a scienctific meeting in Telluride (Colorado). I was told it is a wonderful place for a conference, and I was very much looking forward to an exciting meeting in a fantastic environment. I have just canceled my participation, despite having booked already everything.

Just found out NIH has officially canceled our grant, a longitudinal study of Alzheimer's disease in Black Americans. I cannot even put into words how angry I am. The truth is they are canceling it because it has Black in the title. That's it, there is no other reason to do this.

PSA for NIH R35s: My R35 was administratively withdrawn this year because I broke my Future Research into “Aims” & they said this violated the “Do not submit a Specific Aims page or identify specific aims” policy. So. Don’t use the word “Aims” in an R35 - use “Projects”. #critical

If you have a federal grant, I *highly* recommend going to this Friday's webinar on responding to grant terminations. Lisa Brown, former general counsel at Dept of Ed, will present along with other lawyers. Friday, March 21, 2-3 pm. More info & register here: www.linkedin.com/pulse/regist...
