Would maybe not have phrased it quite like that?

"If you’ve ever wanted to read an academic journal article, though, you may have noticed that it costs money to download it—anywhere between $5 and $90. The article’s author isn’t getting that money."

No-one: Hey, how's the job hunt going? Me: Just submitted my 11th for this year No-one: Great, how many interviews? Me: what are those?

The Google satellite map of Sawtry inadvertently exposes someone destroying a neighbour's house with a death-ray

My first book is now available from Palgrave. This is the academic equivalent of building a jet engine or marksmen rifle in your shed. An academic, without institutional affiliation is still an academic if they produce work: link.springer.com/book/10.1007...

W.E.B. Du Bois on Robert E. Lee: “Either he knew what slavery meant when he helped maim and murder thousands in its defense, or he did not. If he did not he was a fool. If he did, Robert Lee was a traitor and a rebel–not indeed to his country, but to humanity and humanity’s God.”

This is why they will never allow the tenure-track via challenge to single-combat route. Too great a risk that a candidate has 'prior experience.'

A great pedagogy tip. The main problem for medievalists is that we can only assign sources that have been translated into English - and those (popular sourcebook series, the Internet Medieval Sourcebook, etc.) have mostly already been fed into AI training data.

Absolutely surreal to have lived through the Napster days and watched as the titans of industry moved hell and high water to lock down any possible chance that someone's song might get swapped online without giving the studios a cut and now those same people are just like "well we gotta steal music"

When I retire I want to open a more historically informed version of Medieval Times for England in which knights have the Virgin painted on the inside of their shields and wealthy guests are expected to bring books of hours and there is an anchorite living in the entryway

Just a Bakelite electrical plug splitter/extension thingy. Turns one powerpoint into three. Look at it, it is SO PRETTY.

Big fan of this as a method, both for bigots and for disengaging with male academics that We All Know About.

A quick question for manuscript people: can you think of any other examples where a scribe/translator notes *per manum* 'by the hand of' with a little drawing of a hand - as below?

A Chicago Pope implies the existence of an MLA Pope and APA Pope

If your partner is a medievalist you should expect that they will walk you through the joys of declining personal names in Latin on the day you discover that The National Archives has just made your life so much easier. www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/latin/refere...

Grateful to Steven Gunn for such a thoughtful and detailed engagement.

Really delighted with this review!

Everyone watching Pierre Poilievre eat absolute shit in Carleton and respecting Canada's bilingual culture.

This is probably the strangest (and also the fiercest) article I've ever written, out now in History Workshop Journal. And it's available open access! academic.oup.com/hwj/advance-...

Yeah, I went there . . .

My friend just sent me this from the Cardiff protest. Contender for best protest sign I’ve ever seen

what an amazing definition. my loose translation: “Ben Shapiro, for anyone not familiar with him, is an LLM which generates voicemails from Tucker Carlson at 1.5x speed”

“Talking with the vice president helped the cardinal better understand the Book of Job,” said a Vatican spokesperson, who added that the Book of Job itself was not discussed.

Not the same indeed.
