Already really excited to be heading to Oxford later this year to attend this hugely valuable meeting for preclinical stroke researchers. Ably organised by @dryvonnecouch.bsky.social it promises to be a great networking event in a beautiful location! See you there! www.ndcn.ox.ac.uk/study-with-u...

Any UK science people who work on brain injury we have a conference (with a focus on stroke) coming up in September which I'm boosting here - lots of chat on cell culture models, zebrafish, mice and rats. Come join us for all things translational brain research! 🧪 www.linkedin.com/posts/dr-yvo...

Paper rejection on a Sunday. Two really nice reviews, one not. Responded but did not convince the one person so big fat no. Serves me right for checking my work email I suppose.

Because they never tell you which reviewer you are it's always fun to try and remember what you wrote and today, it turns out, I am reviewer number 2...

Three. Day. Weekend.

It's been a long week, this seems like the only answer....

This has hit home this week after I failed to secure an interview for a permanent post. I can see my career coming to a screeching halt in the middle of next year and I'm already slightly panicking about it...

I didn't look at the news until lunch time and this feels very much like Brexit all over again where I am not sure who lives in this country but I remain quite uncomfortable with some of their 1930s views...

After a bad morning, this has cheered my day right up: yamir-1138.github.io/SpinZero/ 🧪

Been in Oxford for well over a decade and never done May Morning. Still haven't heard the choir but just accidentally went through town for a meeting when the bells were still going on a glorious #mayday

Looking for a very specific person to speak to - please reach out in your networks. 1. Background in developmental psych/neuroscience 2. Open science advocate (good knowledge of the problems/scene) 3. Interested in exploring jobs/ projects outside of academia and/or translational neuroscience

I'd love to know why my smoke alarm batteries always choose to die at about 2am...

Controversial hot take of the day: I could take or leave both Oreos and custard creams

I can't listen to music with words whilst I work but I need to block out the office chatter & was bored of the 'generic piano' but have recently rediscovered The Classic Chillout Album from 2001 which I worked to as an undergrad and it is just excellent. Including the full 3.5m of x-files theme tune

645 and I'm locked out of the building I work in because it's taken admin well over a month to get me a new university card...

For everyone making it to #BNA this week I'm throwing out a request for you to go see my student Myrto's poster (PM297). It's her first big conference and I'm not there to provide support so this is me trying to do it virtually!

Our TV has a snoopy screensaver and I'm really enjoying all the random things it presents, this evening in the best interests of @whimsicalmuse.bsky.social tonight Snoopy is enjoying a book...

All for this type of study...

My home broadband has "issues" which means all the paper revisions and grant writing I had planned have been replaced by vacuuming and dusting. If I don't get my next grant you can blame @hyperoptic.bsky.social

Journal did a rapid turnaround of my manuscript. Yay! They have then ruined it by saying that for the 'major revisions' I have 14 days to turn the manuscript around....sigh. I also need to figure out a way to highlight I HAVE NO MORE MONEY FOR THIS PROJECT. The data is what it is. 🧪

at the grant writing stage where i have 900 ideas, many of which are dumb and none of which seem to cohesively string together...

Recent discoverer of Night Science and it's got some of my favourite people including @harmitmalik.bsky.social and @cbartman.bsky.social, am a little sad about the 20:50 women:men but at least it's vaguely reflective of science!

My first person arrives in the lab today and I'm trying to tone down my excitement so I don't overwhelm her!

Happy Easter from under my apple tree... 🌱

My new favourite hobby is walking the dog round the neighbourhood and judging everyone's drinking habits on glass recycling day..."five bottles of pinot...someone had a party"...."oh you drink hipster beer, how lovely!"

I have resorted to using chatGPT as a sounding board for my grant ideas and I am concerned I am becoming delusional because it repeatedly tells me I am 'asking really insightful questions'...

Writing your first fellowships, lots of things you should consider before you start, not the least of which is 'should I be doing this?'...

This old snoozehound is in for an op today and I absolutely cannot focus on writing a fellowship...

“The time to write a fellowship is when it feels right for you.” Great advice from @dryvonnecouch.bsky.social’s new guest blog on writing your first fellowship. www.dementiaresearcher.nihr.ac.uk/blog-writing...

Manuscript: submitted. Feeling: underwhelmed.

My mum, who will hate me posting this but also won't ever know, is on her first solo trip since my Dad passed four years ago and I could not be more proud of her. All the way to New Zealand!

more old school boring immunohistochemistry for the science feed.... 🧪

Two papers to write. Forced myself to the top floor where there is no cleaning to be done, laundry is going to take about two hours, turned email off, turned whatsapp off, closed browsers, got tea...

My new way of feeling productive is to trip over a task I literally just remembered I needed to do, frenetically scribble it down on my 'to do' list seconds before I complete it, complete it, then cross it out in a vaguely self-satisfied way. It's amazing how many lies my brain believes. #goals

I try to avoid being political but I believe I speak on behalf of the whole of the UK and Europe when I say we absolutely do not want your food.... #tariffs
