The Shirley Exception. "Surely, there will be exceptions?" It does a lot of work in letting people support things in principle they would oppose in practice.

This Saturday's going to be a line in a sand. Stuff's going to happen, though I don't know what. That stuff is going to make some number of people who aren't paying attention, start paying attention. And some number of people who aren't acting are going to start acting.

Find me someone who thinks Chuck Schumer's doing a great job and I owe you a Toblerone - and I'll also ignore that person's advice going forward. I'm doing a lot of ignoring useless people these days, whether they're a Senator or Some Guy.

Build the shed! Call your good elected officials and say thanks, and call your useless ones and tell them to get off their ass! Support candidates who are doing the work! Run for office! Our legacy leadership sucks. We all know that. We build the shed by elevating new blood and new ideas past them.

But if a few people in masks start lighting stuff on fire? Then you have news. This creates an *enormous* attentional advantage towards the most violent and chaotic kind of protest.

Exactly! Yesterday we were talking about how they *do not have the power*- even with every National Guardsman, every policeman, every fed, every infantryman from every branch- to stage a military occupation of the US's urban centers. That didn't magically stop being true.

Fort Bragg has over 52K personnel stationed there. There *may* be 100 of these chuds. People need to remember that this optic has been Trump's SOP since Day 1.

To be fair, "moderates" didn't line up behind Cuomo, per se. "All the people in Cuomo's mutual-bribery-extortion-and-graft ring" lined up behind Cuomo, and brought the voters who trust them along. Add on low-info voters who are voting for the guy whose name they remember...

Definitely talk to a lawyer before you do anything rash. But I feel like the immediate takeaway is - hey protestors! BE NICE TO THE GUARD. YOU WANT TO BE ON THE SAME SIDE WHEN SHIT GOES DOWN.

Which is once again why u should read @deadcarl.bsky.social (and who was kind enough to provide me the Jena 1806 passage for an article I’m writing)

Fundamentally 'how does this impact the struggle' is going to come down to: is the majority understanding - the *image* - of LA protests (a) a building set on fire by 'looters' or is (b) an ICE agent clubbing someone's grandma or tear-gassing someone's kid? If (b), you win.

What is the radical liberal? It is someone who derives their principles from a fundamental belief that all people are created equal, endowed with inalienable rights, and that society should be constituted from there

“Then we’re fucked. No point worrying about that door. What do we do with the other one?” That’s the whole answer.
