A student is filing a grade appeal because they only cheated on some of the questions on the exam, so they believe they deserve half credit. And welcome to hours of paperwork ahead... "Cop" is the part of my job that I abhor

Last week the Calstate Northridge Faculty Senate passed a resolution I led, objecting to the CSU's adoption of ChatGPT Edu as undermining our educational goals and misusing scarce funds, calling for the CSU to drop the $16.9 million subscription live-csu-northridge.pantheonsite.io/sites/defaul...

Picking up some Ben & Jerry's on the way home tonight

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants. Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

Science Magazine gets it wrong. 🧵

NSF is hosting a webinar today for CAREER proposals. I'll be curious to see how this goes, given slashes to anything education related (a core tenant of the CAREER program is melding research and teaching/training). And y'know. Perhaps no basic research divisions anymore.

Word on the street is that it's actually better to write/email your reps about the NSF/NIH situation right now. Include info on how you are directly being impacted

Andor: “They have no shame, do they? They don't even bother to lie badly anymore. I suppose that’s the final humiliation.”

The hidden underwater eden of ‘California’s Galapagos’, where seals and grizzly bear-sized bass reign

The entire point of ANDOR is to make it painfully clear that liberation and rebellion is a 'seamless garment'* of factions. Yet, so much discourse is in which thread is the most important. And so a substantial conclusion is that, of course, the woman's thread is the worst. Ah, the internet!

Like most Americans, the NSF celebrated its 75th birthday while dying a preventable death

Knew it was coming but it still makes me mad. On Friday DOGE terminated our NSF grant supporting @datanuggets.bsky.social and an amazing collaboration to help encourage more students to pursue STEM careers. That’s $1M that would have went towards jobs, educators, and teaching kids data literacy.

great job Gavin

NEWS: I just led 112 of my colleagues in demanding answers from the Trump Administration on their funding freeze of the National Science Foundation. Cutting off NSF funding threatens vital research, stalls innovation, and risks ceding global scientific leadership to China.

Some limited bridge funding available for those with cancelled NSF grants: www.spencer.org/grant_types/...

How do we go about communicating the value of our universities? Instead of vague stuff about all we do, let's talk about our own institutions and the very real and specific impacts of our work. #academicsky 🧪

BREAKING: A federal court ruled that our client Rümeysa Öztürk must be released on bail immediately. She will return home to New England as her case proceeds.

I always think finals week is when I'll get a moment to breathe, but instead it's when everybody schedules all the meetings they couldn't fit into the semester

This is an absolute disaster. If we don't stop this, they will turn NSF into a pawn of the Trump administration. There will be no research on climate, biodiversity, or anything that isn't eugenics or AI or how to more efficiently destroy the planet for profit. This cannot be allowed to happen.

The CSUN Faculty Senate just passed a resolution opposing the CSU adoption of ChatGPT Edu without faculty consultation at a cost of ~$1 million per month. Thanks to @jbyoder.org for organizing!

Every week is worse than the last...

The CSU system has some landmark field stations that transform urban and first-gen college students into scientists who do irreplaceable research in the environmental sciences and to address climate change. The wealthy community surrounding Tiburon should be to step up and save this gem.

This week I asked students to write down two benefits of species diversity. Then we had a discussion. The number of students who turned in some AI answer about how it increases innovation...all you had to do was listen to the discussion!

If you had to bet, would you say that a year from now, people are planning to go to summer conferences as usual or will everybody be broke? (asking as a very anxious planner of a conference)

Friends, I am a scientific journal editor and someone who teaches scientific writing to graduate students. When you submit a paper for peer review, PLEASE suggest reviewers! You know your field better than I do! No one with an obvious COI- we check- but people who can fairly review it.

NSF funding is under threat — and students, postdocs, early-career scientists are to lose the most! We should stand together! Get informed and mobilized from today, by joining us in this Week of Action for NSF. Use this Media Tool to get started: shorturl.at/i7WfU #WithoutNSF #SaveNSF #SupportNSF

I read three news stories about these tariffs this morning and none of them even mentioned that it’s clearly not allowed

In grad seminar yesterday, we were talking about legacy being planting seeds in a garden you never get to see. Then this story wrecked me...

Gahhh, do it for university professors...

Well we've hit the "let the babies die" point of fascism...

Teaching as a workout: -get your steps in -increased heart rate -lots of endorphins at the end

Yesterday, a student asked me "what is measles?" and though I was shocked, I realized that measles has never really existed in the US in the 20 years he has been alive. Until now

Me discussing disease ecology in Intro Bio: So what it means in this administration is that a whole bunch of people are going to needlessly die from disease now... *awkward silence* *awkward silence* Soooo, let's pivot to talk about facilitation then!

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker: "Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now. These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace. They must understand that we will fight their cruelty with every megaphone and microphone that we have."

We begin reviewing applications next week!

Amy Angert & I are recruiting 2 field technicians for demographic surveys of scarlet monkeyflower in late summer-fall. Please spread word to any potentially interested candidates! jobs.ncsu.edu/postings/217...

Bonobos aren't actually very peaceful it's just that the females gang up on any aggressive male and take him down to maintain a matriarchy. Just sayin.
