Maybe best to plan like the pandemic. Keep it small, have a virtual option. No grants means out of pocket travel. Only a small number can do that.

I’d expect very low international attendance at US conferences. Plus lower attendance because academia almost everywhere, but especially in the US, is in bad shape.

I think there is a lot of uncertainty. In your shoes I'd be looking really carefully at venue costs (esp. hospitality), cancellation fees and deadlines and what my break-even attendance is.

I was already planning to do many fewer conferences this year because 1) I just moved, 2) I've been on the road pretty continuously since 2022, 3) it's expensive, and 4) I'm tired. But right now I suspect I'll be largely staying home next year too due to *gestures* everything

Maybe those out of work who have some money stashed and want to network for job seeking purposes will go. But I think many will be out of work and broke. I think virtual would be more successful if I were betting.

I think we're in for several years of low attendance at US-based conferences by international folks (because of border terror) and especially low attendance at international conferences by US folks (because money)
