Pretty wild considering this 10 year period also included the entire firs Trump administration. A failure on the reporter's part not to challenge him on that. Few reporters seem capable of follow up questions. Maybe he's delusional, or maybe he's fully aware but driven by loyalty/fear.

I get that, but I don't think publishing news and conducting social studies experiments are a good combination, even if everyone else is doing that sort of thing right now.

Exactly. It really bums me that the lessons don't seem to have sunk in a quarter century later. I put in hundreds of hours in support of Harris, and they had some good tactics, but you can't win by being on defense all the time.

Liberals think and communicate in ways that work for class or debate; they want the teacher's approval. Conservatives do so in ways that work for winning fights and gaining social status; they want peer approval. Sadly, being above the fray does not work well in actual confrontations with bullies.

They're not, though. They're conditioned to respond, much as reporters are conditioned to asking bold-sounding questions but largely incapable of follow up. The GOP (and their media allies) work *much* harder on psychology and communications. Their policies are ass, but they are great at sales.

This is disappointing to see Seamus. I trust your objectivity a little less now.

This is not just a media problem. The GOP denounce the Dems as traitors on the regular, while the Dems cling to being the nice party and using polite euphemism rather than risk being accused of immoderation. That's why they keep getting stuffed in lockers.

100% Also perplexed by the Dems' failure to focus on this in their own messaging. They're rightly outraged about the treatment of Padilla but virtually silent about Noem's attack on federalism. This is a self-own, not a media failure.

That's bullshit The DoJ shouldn't be able to introduce new claims after a procedural loss, this is a basic rule of jurisprudence (as appellate defendants are constantly reminded).

Centrists are gonna bipartisan their way right into a boxcar As long as the GOP is marching in lockstep behind an authoritarian, legislative cooperation with them is suicidal. istg the lack of historical awareness in this country is an embarrassment.

What is the value of Democrats voting with Republicans to advance legislation that secures Republican priorities?

I not-too-secretly hope for a blowup where DC announces they're cutting off the financial faucet to CA and we do the same

I think she means the former, but is also deliberately employing that sort of rhetorical ambiguity to be able to handwave criticism. imho we need to evaluate it in the context of Trump's enthusiasm for seeing Newsom arrested, Johnson's tar-and-geathering comments etc.

Given the administrations past actions, I think it's wiser to take such statements at face value instead of looking for esoteric interpretations.

More of this please, at long last politicians are starting to call it like it is

I think it's important that we take her remarks at face value. All too often people have been content to let MAGA types redefine or restate their words to deflect critics, only to follow up with the very actions they threatened in the first place.

Facts. Padilla interrupted Noem when she threatened California: “We are not going away. We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city.”
comment in response to post
Using the military to remove the Mayor of LA and the Governor of California is arguably a treasonous act. There is no reason not to take her remarks at face value, given the degree to which their actions have followed their rhetoric.
comment in response to post
You should report Kristi Noem's unlawful threats. “We are not going away. We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city.”
comment in response to post
She's quite literally saying she's using the military to remove the elected Governor of California and the Mayor of Los Angeles. You should be calling for a nationwide #GeneralStrike.
comment in response to post
Let's be even more clear: Padilla interrupted her because she was threatening our State!! “We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city.”
comment in response to post
*mayor 🤦 Anyway, my point is that she's a domestic enemy of the US, and so is her boss. They are now explicitly conducting military action against the State of California.
comment in response to post
It's much worse than that. “We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city.” She threatened to remove a US governor with military force.
comment in response to post
This is a direct threat to use federal military force to remove the governor of a US state and the major of a US city. You need to act against this tyrannical assault on a US state. There is no answer she could give that would make this OK. The constitutional crisis is here, now.
comment in response to post
You must act on what Noem was saying when Padilla interrupted: “We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city.” 1/2
comment in response to post
Full Noem quote: “We are not going away. We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city.” There's no good interpretation of this.
comment in response to post
Are you willing to sign on to articles of impeachment, against Noem or Trump? Noem specifically said the military was there to "liberate this city from the socialist and the burdensome leadership", implying the forcible removal of our elected officials. Are we in occupied California now?

Those recipes are lacking in ways you've articulated, but when the mainstream consensus is 'March? Make speeches, vote, idk really' this is inevitable. Turns out nonviolent passive resistance and having a few martyrs get assassinated isn't the magic social prophylactic most people thought it was.
comment in response to post
Academic sensemaking is good, but tbh I think the reason Stanley, Snyder et al have left the US is the institutional/ establishment actors have largely proved incapable of articulating and leading opposition to authoritarianism. The only people offering recipes are anarchists and Hollywood.
comment in response to post
But what do you expect? Academics put out 20 articles a week analyzing authoritarianism and hardly anything on how to oppose it, and those are heavily survivorship-biased (eg Chenoweth). People want roadmaps, not recapitulations of how they got lost, which is why demagoguery is so effective.

California needs to issue an arrest warrant for Noem.

Facts do not bother, liar. I have for months advocated slowing legislative business to a crawl using existing methods, with full awareness of the limitations. Now fuck off, you defeatist propagandist. You are an advocate for doing nothing and nothing is what you deserve.

The Dems should not be giving a single vote to the GOP on anything, filibustering everything, holding all nominees. Many of us have been saying this for months. Schumer is a weak leader who should resign in favor of someone who wants to actually fight.
comment in response to post
We told you repeatedly for months to halt all legislative cooperation with the administration, and you kept saying the time wasn't right and telling people to wait for Trump's poll numbers to go down so you could persuade people in the gym. Your lack of leadership helped to enable this. Resign.

Ceremonial or not, members of Congress should be of sound mind. Being unable to follow debates or read bills is unacceptable. I'm sure sure DC can find many people who are not in terminal cognitive decline who would be glad to speak for its residents in Congress.

This appears to be from 2020 Just in the last few hours you've been posting footage from fascist Andy Ngo, fake crowd footage from an AI video account on Tiktok, and this 5 year old cropped screenshot of an instagram post. Seems sus, maybe you should slow down and be more careful what you post
comment in response to post
Don't you see how how insulting voters' intelligence like this costs them in other races? Being a member of Congress is not supposed to be a status gift. I can't understand why you would endorse such dysfunction.

Seems like a somewhat weak claim, based on a hypothetical. If the election is re-done, I hope Hogg wins again
