This is why I teach drawing games whenever I can. To teach the joy of drawing for its own sake. That bad drawings can bring joy like full-hearted bad singing karaoke with your pals. It's not binary, it's a sliding scale. Doodle!

Thought Bubble & Travelling Man have teamed up to present micro-bursaries for nine UK-based early career comic creators. Each recipient will receive £400 in cash, and a table at Thought Bubble Comic Convention 2025. Find out more and submit your name here: thoughtbubblefestival.com/microbursaries

Preparing a talk about #bookshops & fearful attitudes to stocking graphic novels. I opened Jam & called it a BOOKSHOP. Then filled it with 50% of comics displayed evenly to see what happens. After 2 years selling, I have figures to show the results. Stock #comics & people will try & buy them!

Just got let go from my job so if anyone would like to get themselves a little treat from my shop now is a good time! Help me pay for surgery for my orange fella 🧡🐈

Your comic book lettering critique.

Oh this looks great! If you were planning on picking up/reading Suzanne and hadn't gotten around to it, this is a nice excuse to do so and join the @goshcomics.bsky.social reading group!

🧵Here are 7 great books on making comics and graphic novels. Feel free to add to this list with more books we haven’t mentionned (we haven’t read them all). Any good ones on manga?

Some recent pages from a pitch for a kids book on palaeontology, inspired by a visit I got to make to @stevebrusatte.bsky.social's lab a couple of years ago. This is a book I'd love to do - exploring the actual science that helps us understand how prehistoric animals lived. #kidlit #kidscomics

Feeling quite overwhelmed with the state of the world right now, but one good thing I did for myself was to download a bunch of these Studio Ghibli screenshots and then set it up so that a different one is my computer desktop every day. It's a little treat for myself at the start of the work day!

There's a community food hub in the meadows, Edinburgh, keen to give away food donated from supermarkets (M&S no less!). They had oranges, tortillas, bread, potatoes, blackberries, pasties, peppers, beans & more! They need to give all the food away before it has to be thrown in the bin.

Call for artists: We are looking to collaborate with a graphic novelist to create a graphic novel about people's experiences of sexual health in 20th century Britain. Please share widely!

In this weeks newsletter I discuss “a thing” which is an important asset to cartoonists, and not “The Thing” which might be a cartoonist and we wouldn’t know it. ellis-newsletter-06cc2e.beehiiv.com/p/is-this-a-...

What is wisdom?

Alright, a question for illustrators and children’s authors going into schools: what’s your response when a young person says ‘they can’t draw’ or seem resigned to ‘not being good’ at drawing/storytelling? I feel like I encounter this a lot, especially in high schools…

Hey! I’ve been a bit quiet here recently, but maybe I should be shouting about my work a bit more? I make comics about interesting subjects like movies, video games and science! And recently my book Graphic Novel Builder came out, a guide to making comics for ages 9+ 👇

There’s a fantastic comic all about this by @tomhumberstone.com … thenib.com/im-a-luddite/

In the news: In which we learn that our leaders find it easier to believe "AI is the future" than to believe that actual, living human beings who make art for a living have rights and deserve respect. Our consent doesn't matter to them. Only appeasing the tech bros matters.

Spent a lot of time last week thinking about the beautiful way that the Headphones On The Bus Discourse captures our nation story, so I did a cartoon about that www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

I should be better about advertising this but I’m doing a free blender beginner workshop for cartoonists for NIF on May 24th! I plan to show you everything you need to get started building your own reference materials and setting up scenes in blender.

Shout out for Graphic Novel Builder by @edwardross.bsky.social ! An excellent guide to making comics. We like how it also cover the basics of writing stories (applicable to any media) rather than just focus on the nuts and bolts of comics. #KidsGN📚💬
