Ich finde, der ESC ist viel spannender geworden als der Folkloristikzoo, der er mal war: Es ist das einzige europaweite Event, in dem ein europäisches Publikum mit eigener Popkultur konstruiert wird. Dass das auch über Englisch als Lingua Franca passiert, ist für mich total akzeptabel.

Das ist häufig wahr - aber nicht nur. Viele Stiftungen halten, unabhängig vom Wechsel an Regierungen und deren Prioritäen, wichtige Projekte am Leben. In Deutschland eher selten (schönes Gegenbeispiel: die Fuggerei), aber in der angelsächsischen Welt häufiger.

Die B&M Gates Stiftung setzt sich insbesondere für Gesundheitsthemen in Entwicklungsländern ein und fördert dabei Forschung an Krankheiten, die in entwickelten Ländern nicht prävalent sind. Das sind Themen, für die Staaten ihre nationalen Steuereinnahmen eher selten oder nur gering verwenden.

Bill Gates und Warren Buffet haben die gegründet, primär über die Abgabe ihrer jeweiligen Unternehmensanteile an die Bill und Melinda Gates Stiftung (eine sehr erfolgreiche Stiftung). Beide haben Testamente nach denen sie 99 Prozent ihres Vermögens nach ihrem Tod spenden. Was möchte man mehr?

Is this not a very monolithic view of the nation state that blurs the reception of different times? Is Einstein's biography not a reflection of both the best of the Weimar Republic and the crimes of the Third Reich?
On your logic you may also have to reject Galileo as symbol of Italian excellence.

Es gibt ein paar Beispiele für (im jeweiligen politischen Spektrum eher linke) liberale, progressive Politikerinnen in Osteuropa: zB Katja Kallas (mit relativer Mehrheit) und Natasa Pirc Musar (Sanna Marin auch, wenn man so will). Im Westen fällt mir Nicola Sturgeon ein.

Vorab, das ist ebenfalls auch nicht ein Indikator für "der breiten Mehrheit bekannt" - aber gibt mal in der Google Suche Adam Tooze und "Wirtschaftshistoriker" ein (um die deutlich mehr ausländischen Quellen auszublenden) und du siehst ihn in (fast?) allen überregionalen Printmedien.

Mal davon abgesehen, dass Lanzauftritte wohl nicht der Standard dafür sind, was in Deutschland eine breite Mehrheit kennt, ist Tooze regelmäßig mit Diskussionsbeiträgen in unterschiedlichen Printmedien vertreten (oder wird darin aufgegriffen), füllt Säle mit Auftritten und verkauft viele Bücher.
