In case you missed it last week: Surrey & @ucudmu.bsky.social are facing fire & rehire, with jobs moved to a newly-established subsidiary company with worse pay & conditions. #SaveHE #UKHE

It's National Biscuit Day! I'm celebrating with a custard cream. What's your choice of twice-baked delight?

Stop! ... what you're going; these fish are armed. It's the last Sunday of the month so it's time for #OffGridPod ep. 52 offgrid.tlmb.net/2025/05/25/r...

I wrote about the widespread adoption of AI in education, and why there needs to be more resistance to it open.substack.com/pub/irinadum...

For anyone who has the opportunity to vote in a local election today, this tactical voting site may be useful: stopthetories.vote Remember to take your photo ID!

This month's Off-Grid podcast includes a brief education on Ibsen and some entertaining discussion about tactile paving... give it a listen!

A useful and very relatable article for anyone enduring yet another restructure in HE at the moment... www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-funding-k...

MPs being (rightly) recalled over the 2,700 jobs at risk in British steel, while 5,000 university jobs are actively being cut this year with a further 5,000 jobs under threat and very little intervention is... interesting. Academia is also an industry in collapse. www.ucu.org.uk/article/1393...

Seeking advice from Braille users! I work for a university and a colleague in Student Support would like to purchase a Braille embosser for VI students and staff to use. She's looking at the Tiger Braille Embosser model: shop.rnib.org.uk/products/vie.... She's wanting feedback from Braille users...

RNIB is celebrating 200 years of Braille this year, yet simultaneously cutting its free Braille transcription service. Please sign and share the petition.

For anyone who still partakes in the apparently quaintly old-fashioned pursuit of letter-writing or sending hand-written cards, the cost of postage stamps is (again) increasing from 7 April. Beat the price hikes now! Then how about practising your handwriting and making someone's day?!

😬

I’ll say it again: generative AI should’ve been strangled at birth. It serves no good purpose, relies for its existence on theft, and is too expensive for the planet to sustain.

Yesterday, staff at the University of Kent were given information about the third major restructure of professional services within the past 5 years. The information was unclear and incomplete, but many of us will yet again be facing risk of redundancy. Yesterday was 'University Mental Health Day'.😬

Worth a listen just for the opening: Dave Gorman explaining the basics of a cryptic crossword clue to Grace Dent! 🤣 www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

Word of the day is ‘whiffling’ (17th century): fickle, inconstant, and making it up as you go along.

The crisis in British higher education is acute + painful right now. If you are in it you already know this, but for those who are not I want to share what is going on. As strikes start at Newcastle Uni + others will doubtless follow, now is a time for solidarity + resistance

www.theguardian.com/technology/2... Not just students, I would argue!

Word of the day is ‘cumber-world’ (14th century): a person or thing that encumbers the planet.

New cartoon exhibition at the pub called The Pub in Herne Bay, Kent. That's me on the left in the window 🙂 Mix of old favourites and some newer stuff.

Aaah... Sheila Hancock! 🤣👏 www.theguardian.com/culture/2025...

At the end of a terrible day for UK Higher Education, Research Professional News has a damning scorecard of failure, with 750 jobs under threat just at Cardiff, Kent, Durham and the University of East Anglia.

Aaaand Kent is in the news again, for all the wrong reasons 😬 BBC News - University seeks more job cuts to save £19.5m www.bbc.com/news/article...
