This got cut but it was surprisingly (somewhat) more diverse than the photo represents! I talked to a bunch of young Black girls who came there via the church. It was still overwhelmingly white tho

Update: Paul Saladino, the Carnivore MD who famously does not use toilet paper, was also at this event www.instagram.com/reel/DKFLSXY...

He wrote about it for us publicly! I edited him! I’m surprised no one has clocked him yet bc he’s pretty big and the stories are still up

I sent screenshots to Meta, and told them I had personally ID’ed 15 girls who appeared to still be in high school — one of whom is a freshman — in the Skinni Societe. They said they’ve removed some of Schmidt’s content. They have NOT taken the group, or her page, down. www.thecut.com/article/infl...

On the chat, these girls parrot Schmidt’s advice and eat as little as possible, framing it as empowering and encouraging each other to eat less and less. “It’s like this little cult of being skinny,” a former member said.

On the group chat, I saw girls as young as 16 eating less than 1000 calories a day, walking 15,000+ steps a day, and losing a dangerous amount of weight in a short time. Some reported heath effects like fatigue, dizziness, and nosebleeds. www.thecut.com/article/infl...

Liv has more than 6000 Skinni Societe members who pay for her content, as well as access to a private group chat. I joined the group chat for a month. It was…..horrifying. www.thecut.com/article/infl...

Liv Schmidt was banned from TikTok for violating its rules promoting EDs. But on Instagram, she not only is allowed to post pro-ED messaging and weight loss “hacks” like filling up on tea and ice water — she’s making bank, charging $20/month to her 6000+ subscribers. www.thecut.com/article/infl...

There was an era in mid-2010s startup media where basically the only currency was good ideas. If you were smart and creative, you were free to build whatever you wanted. It was chaotic and exciting and unsustainable and I miss it so, so much.
