Our fragmented, individualistic culture might have affected how we mourn the passing of family members. For example, I was unable to attend my grandmother's funeral years ago because of distance. My friend and former colleague, Raymond Williams, offers his thoughts on these changes.

Wendell Potter has the lowdown on the Repugs proposed Medicaid work requirements. Resist!

Should I Switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare? While Original Medicare is superior to MA in many ways, Medicare is not perfect. Weighing the benefits and shortcomings of each is difficult. Things should not be this way.

If you’re approaching 65, don’t drift into the Medicare Advantage trap like I did. Do your research. Now, I’m having to rethink my alternatives, and that’s a pain. Learn from my example.

Democrats must contest every office in every election everywhere until the MAGA nightmare is over.

Along with our fellow Americans, we seniors face strong, unanticipated challenges to our well-being by our own government. We need to resist and overcome these challenges since they threaten us and all our fellow citizens.

As distressing as it is, this information is vitally important for elders.

Are Old People Useless? It's bad enough that many elderly persons come to think of themselves as useless, often because of widespread stereotyping. When society, as a matter of policy, considers them useless, the result threatens to become murderous.

I haven’t seen any other predictions about how Trump’s economic disaster is likely to play out. This seems plausible.

This needs to receive much more attention from all media outlets. So far, all I see is a collective yawn.

In these chaotic times, many of us will face severe non-death loss of jobs, financial security, health, and relationships. How we respond will shape our future lives. How will you cope?

The War on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefit millions of people in addition to the elderly. But all three are especially vital to the well-being of senior citizens. The current regime’s attempt to destroy these programs must be stopped.

If Grief is a Weapon, I'm Fully Armed This post describes how an older person feels about losing loved ones and the essence of her country at the same time. We can do something about the latter.

Grieving Death As I get older, I’m grieving the loss of others more frequently. There’s no single right way to cope with such losses. Here’s what I’ve learned as that process becomes a component of daily life.

Grief is universal and unique: we all grieve, and we all do it in our own way. For me, grieving means recalling and revising chapters in my life’s story – a never-ending reconstruction of a sense of meaning and purpose. “Closure” is never the point. How do you cope? What would you recommend?

Older folks often encounter difficulty with moving about and staying upright. Physical ailments, decreasing muscle mass, and lack of balance can lead to falls and other problems. Falling off a bike (worse than what happened to Joe Biden) was a wake-up call. Here's what I've learned about coping.

The Trump regime’s attack on higher ed threatens college opportunity for students, especially those who depend on federal financial aid. The experience of today might disappear altogether.

Cornell’s president offers a ringing defense of free inquiry and debate at America’s universities. Perhaps others will be inspired to find their institutional spines.

Jason Stanley, Timothy Snyder, and Marci Shore are leaving Yale to join the Munk School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Toronto. Why? And what does that mean for academics who don’t have such an opportunity to leave the US?

This is a really good summary of where we are now. Chilling.

This week's post features guest author, Raymond Williams, former professor of religion at Wabash College. As he approaches 90 years of age, Raymond offers his perspective and tips on how to have an enjoyable, purposive retirement.

This not about Pete Hegseth. It's about the despicable commander-in-chief who has the power to end human life on the planet. Watch the embedded video clips.

ALERT!! Must reading for everyone on Bluesky.

So, Trump denies having signed the proclamation invoking the 1798 Alien Enemies Act. But the federal registry shows his signature. Perhaps some functionary found Biden’s alleged autopen!

Back in the 1950s, elderly people were typically on their own. Social Security had started recently, but many people were excluded. Now, more senior citizens are more dependent on it than ever. Cutting services and benefits is exactly the wrong thing to do.

The cruel attack on seniors and the disabled continues. This is what happens when a psychopath reports to a malignant narcissist. Although I’m not sure who reports to whom.

I hope everyone enjoys March Madness while their favorite university is on the verge of being hollowed out. 🏀🏀🏀

Another serious violation of a federal court order by the current regime. Are we in a constitutional crisis yet?

Most people eventually downsize and move to smaller living units after retirement. But downsizing involves a lot more than packing boxes. In recent years, I haven't handled that well. And I'm hoping that others can benefit from what I've learned. It's never too early to think about such things.

Elizabeth Case is not alone.

The cuts to these agencies and programs should be rescinded, not just halted.

As large investors continue to buy rental properties and homes, thereby driving up rents and home purchase prices, what should be done? Should we simply let the market drive up homelessness, too?

As the current occupant of the White House surrounds himself with loyalist sycophants, I cannot help concluding that his regime now betrays everything that those who fought in World War II were willing to die for.

Too many Democratic lawmakers in the House chamber!

A little informed humor helps.
