What also intrigued me and made me curious to watch it was I realized there's a drawing of the main character in one of Ayami Kojima's doujins, lol.

Finally watched it online, and I'm glad I did. Like I said, it feels very relevant to *gestures around at the state of things*.

I'd never heard of this film but ran across the VHS at the local used bookstore. Having the Nazi flag on the VHS cover, I hesitated to purchase it. I went back when I finally worked up the balls to buy it, even though I had no idea what the film was about, but it was gone.

It's hard to care about boxes when I'm being tested for cancer tomorrow

I've only tried a few times. Even with a rolling mat, I'm a disaster at it and somehow end up with rice everywhere 😂

I'm terrible at making sushi so I go the "sushi bowl" route 😂 very lazy but tasty

I'm also totally fine splitting the shipping! We'll figure it out when we get there lol

I've got stuff I gotta send you too! Unfortunately I may not get to rebinding your books for a while depending how I'm feeling, but it's not that big of a deal to ship them to Canada.

Gotta keep the art ~pure~, lmfao. Nah, most of the arguments I've seen are that Westerners making manga style work is unnecessary. Things like making comics read right to left, having long speech bubbles, using screentones, etc. And thank you! I want to get at it when I'm healthier ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ

I think so too. Especially since Japan has realized how big of a foreign audience there is for manga & JP companies running more and more comic contests for foreigners. Most of the judgmental people I've ever run into were western anyway, lol.

I don't think the discourse is as strong now as it used to be, at least. Plus, in my personal experience, anyone making a stir about it was western. Any JP friends I ever talked to were encouraging. I need to give less shits about things in general, lol.

Here's the menswear guy's post on being undocumented.

I know there's a lot of disc horse surrounding westerners drawing "manga style" comics and there has been since the 00s. Frankly, I don't give a shit.

When I was in college I experimented a lot with my panel layouts. Looking back they were kinda chaotic and messy, but at least I was trying stuff. I've settled into a simpler paneling style now that's mostly inspired by Naoki Urasawa and Scarlet Beriko. I'd like to try experimenting again sometime.

Sure!! Books on paneling: マンガのマンガ 初心者のためのマンガの描き方ガイド コマ割りの基礎編 Book on improving your page layouts: 漫画 魂に響く コマワリ教 I selected these because I saw them recommended a lot on JP sites as good beginner & intermediate resources about paneling/page layouts. I'll likely review them when I get them.

My method to learning comics has always been "study artists I like and see how they do stuff." I've never really read books about the topic, other than some Scott McCloud. So I'm def curious to read some instructional stuff on the topic (using my shit Japanese skills lol).

I picked up two instructional books about manga - one entirely about paneling pages/page layouts, and one of tips to improve your comic pages in general to make them more gripping. I'm curious to dig into them and also to start working on a comic whenever I feel up to it.

It is🥲 Though they say at the beginning of the 250 box challenge that the point is to show you that you can tackle large/daunting tasks if you try and to build confidence because of it, the actual perspective internalization is more secondary.
comment in response to post
There's a 250 cylinder challenge at the end of lesson 5😔 The box challenge is between lesson 1 and 2, so I'll have a while before I get to that at least.
comment in response to post
I don't dislike doing boxes and still find it easy to sit down and do even when I don't feel well, the challenge is just starting to feel long and I want to practice other things

I look forward to daily exercises that are not boxes
