If you make hope mandatory you ruin science. Sometimes the data tells you bad $#!† is happening. Then you gotta figure what to do to fix that, so… more data.

Reusable Target bags were ubiquitous in NYC for awhile. They opened stores in neighborhoods that were underserved by big corporate retail. This was certainly data-driven. But… You add DEI and you've got a chance to ensure brand loyalty for a generation. Target played the short game and lost.

Haven't thought about Ale-81 in 20 years. I guess that makes me "a late one".

Alexander Calder made his first suspended “mobile” sculpture about a hundred years ago. He wasn’t aiming for astronomical accuracy, but a precedence has been set.

Yeah. I thought I’d Google it first before asking. It came back with “non-destructive testing“.

Ignore the “fortune teller” types and whatever the current equivalent is of what used to be the horoscope column in the newspaper. I’ve met people who do astrology as a hobby like it was astrophysics. They can be quite intellectual about it.

Maybe it's like the Wu Tang Clan's Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. There's only one copy, kept in a silver keepsake box, and Martin Shkreli will buy it.

When they realize their mistake and ask you to return, demand 4 years salary in advance and don't type a single character of code until you see the money deposited in your accounts.

I wanted to return to my original disagreement with your statement that black is not a color. You are confounding "color" with "colorfulness" — chromatic colors are real colors and achromatic colors are colorless. cie.co.at/eilvterm/17-... cie.co.at/eilvterm/17-... cie.co.at/eilvterm/17-...

"Actual" and "observed" color? Infrared radiation is a color? That's news to me. That link seems to be describing terminology used in that specific field. Kind of like the way radio-astronomers informally call radio waves "light". Light is visible em radiation. Radio is not light.

"Spectral color" is an informal term, but I still use it. I think it is more correct to say "monochromatic radiation". As for "actual color", well… I've never heard that term. "Perceived" and "observed" probably refer to chromatic color. cie.co.at/eilvterm/17-... cie.co.at/eilvterm/17-...

I like that the last 3 words of their statement are "the public good". I would add that it's always been the first priority of publicly funded science.

Sorry, but color is not a defined physical quantity. Wavelength, frequency, and luminance are, however. Color is subjective, cultural, contextual. That includes black, white, and gray.
comment in response to post
Color does not correspond to wavelength. Color is not a physical property. Color is a response of the human visual system. When two structure-free regions of the visual system are indistinguishable, they are said to have the same color.
