I'm on my way to the Senate floor to talk about the assault on my colleague, Senator Alex Padilla. This is a horrifying moment in our nation’s history.

At #Outlier2025 talking about style guide tips with @alangwilson.bsky.social @datagrazing.bsky.social & @policyviz.bsky.social

Thankfully @amycesal.com, Max Graze, Alan Wilson and @policyviz.bsky.social managed to get their fifteen style guide tips into one summary slide at #outlier2025 so I didn’t have to pick one!

I didn't want to like it, but recent "vibe coding" models are disturbingly impressive?! And kinda fun for prototyping?! 😬 I'm not new to glsl / three.js / etc, but I was surprised at how much it sped up my learning curve for testing new algorithms / approaches?

chord diagram! (also cool research)

🎆📊 Big win for civic dataviz! NAEP now shows student group scores as full distributions. Even for mass-audience reports, we're not stuck w/ conventional (misleading) bars. Proud to have a tiny role in this (+ @lesvillegs.bsky.social @rsavoie.bsky.social) www.nationsreportcard.gov/reports/math...

Had a blast last week at @ncme38.bsky.social #NCME25. Felt a bit surreal presenting now that "equity" research is forbidden knowledge, but was great to see the measurement community engaging with this and the overwhelmingly positive feedback was reassuring.

Previous to the FDA, folks would put chalk and plaster of Paris in milk to make it appear white. They could also add formaldehyde to cover the smell and taste of spoiled milk.

Lol, how many of our design justifications come down to... "Here are 7 rational reasons for doing it this way.... But really I just kinda like the vibes?"

Me at 20: I'll just make this font smaller so I can fit everything. Me at 38½: I'll just make this font smaller so I can fit everything. Me at 39: WHAT A**HOLE MADE ALL THIS TEXT SO SMALL?! 🧐🔍

The idea that race is a social & historical construct has a long history. It was a central plank of the post WWII US consensus for obvious reasons given what pseudo-scientific racism had wrought. One of the central planks of the US right in the post WWII era was that race is a biologically reality.

Chart of cumulative protests reported from Jan 22 - Feb 28, 2017 vs 2025:

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

These are "action packed" notes on showing variability / uncertainty, with tons of examples. Appreciate @datavisfriendly.bsky.social including my and @lacepadilla.bsky.social's work on equity implications of showing variability in public health reporting.

In 2021, McConnell successfully filibustered a Democratic CR ahead of a government shutdown and forced them to accept a clean one instead. What happened this week - a total cave on a totally partisan long-term funding bill - hasn’t happened in the 20 years I’ve covered Congress.

📊 #psy6135 #rstats Today's topic: Visualizing Uncertainty Topics: Visualizing distributions, Error bars, Bayesian stuff, fitted curves, ... Thx to @elibryan.bsky.social, @mjskay.com, @clauswilke.com, @cedricscherer.com and other folks I stole from. 💻 Slides-- friendly.github.io/6135/lecture...

Stereotypes don't just hurt marginalized groups, they hurt everyone. We don't just stereotype by race, we also stereotype groups like "people on Medicaid," those stereotypes cross-pollinate, and support for the whole program suffers. This is why we can't have nice things.

Speaking at Outlier 📊 was an absolute blast! @datavizsociety.bsky.social put on a great show. 10/10 would recommend! You've got until Saturday to apply for Outlier 2025 in Miami! In case you need inspiration for your own talk, these were some of my favorites from last year... 🧵🧵🧵

My hacky approaches for visualizing (sometimes under-reported) achievement data: 1) Hope they publish detailed data and pleasantly spaced scores for proficiency levels (chart below for PIAAC numeracy) 2) Fake it!

Great example data stories for stereotype busting!

The fun thing about that NYT rating thing is that 7 of the 10 contributors are white men, and the Times helpfully (if inadvertently) shows you topic by topic how that skews the results

Look at all these beautiful people! Lines along both side of the street. Chanting, honking, drumming. There were only 6 ppl here 2 weeks ago! Tesla protest Brooklyn. @bkindivisible.bsky.social @indivisible.org @teslatakedown.com #teslatakedown

This is "data" of course, but it's a lot more revealing of the Times' columnists than.. y'know... reality.

I am excited to announce I have been selected to be a judge for this year's Information is Beautiful Awards - a celebration of global excellence in data visualization! I look forward to reviewing your finest jitter plots. www.informationisbeautifulawards.com/news/640-mee...

Can't cancel my WaPo sub again, so I guess it's finally time to let go of Prime? We've shifted a lot of our shopping to Costco lately but I feel like Target could be cleaning up if they hadn't also gone down the appeasement rabbit hole.

we don’t talk enough about this aspect of our current moment: the sadness and grief of losing institutions that were once so important to us, because they proved unworthy of our support. and it is real grief, because we lose what those institution might have been, if only they had been better.

The pictures next to Johnson and the content of his statement are a perfect illustration of how Republicans use racial threat tactics to engage in class warfare.

Headline could easily be "vast majorities of all groups still support democracy." This s***-stirring framing might give a spicier headline, but advertising / exaggerating these fasc-y social norms comes at the cost of making them worse.

Big crowd here already for #TeslaTakedown in Raleigh
