Imagine if you'd spent literally millions of dollars to get into this dinner and what they serve you is the kind of dry-looking salad you could have bought at the supermarket and a couple of entrees. $500,000 for each carrot shred, a cool million per lettuce leaf.

Another day, another email from Russia's fake news factory. If you want an insight into where Russia's strategic interests are at the moment, we've received a dozen emails like this about the President of Moldova since April 21st, and none before. Seems someone got their orders in April.

There’s a word for this. It’s pink slime journalism and everyone agrees it’s bad and harmful to trust in media except when their own side does it, in which case it’s fine I guess.

An excellent article about ex-Russian central banker Viktor Gerashchenko (who died last week) and how he helped build a global shadow banking network used by the KGB and its successor entities. cepa.org/article/fare...

This is madness

Walk with me while we examine the absolutely extraordinary stuff the Trump flacks are doing with the English language, i.e. describing the president as “a virtuoso” whose “musical choices represent a brilliant palette of vibrant colors” www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

The Guardian is doing a series of reports called The Age of Extinction, which is great. I feel like this little acknowledgement could have been better phrased though...

NBC reports that, shockingly, during his latest Moscow pilgrimage Witkoff met with Putin and his two negotiators alone and without his own interpreter, relying - in breach of protocol - on a locally present one www.nbcnews.com/world/russia.... However, this seems half the problem (1/n)

a) This is horrific b) I'm confused about how Pornhub doesn't carry criminal liability for hosting and knowingly distributing CSAM, in instances where the video has been flagged as potential CSAM and yet has not been taken down. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/10/o...

The PLASTIC SURGEON thinks AI imagery is going to be bad for body image and self-esteem. I am genuinely sad for the kids, particularly the girls, who are going to grow up alongside this. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

We could be using AI to solve actual real problems like disease, and instead we’re mostly using it to “solve” the core redistributive mechanism which keeps our entire economies and societies functioning.

The Liberal Party doesn’t have a “woman problem”. Women are not the problem. The Liberal Party has a men problem.

Genuinely, does Donald Trump - owner of many hotels - not want an international tourism industry? www.huffpost.com/entry/jd-van...

Despite misleading marketing, Israeli company TeleMessage, used by Trump officials, can access plaintext chat logs. My findings are based on TM SGNL's source code, and they are corroborated by hacked data micahflee.com/despite-misl...

If there's one person who knows how to win the hearts and minds of the Australian people, it's Gina Rinehart. Everyone says so, especially the Olympic swimming team, loudly and repeatedly every time a camera swings in their direction. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

1) These are real posts from official accounts 2) I haven’t seen Star Wars and even I know the red light sabres are the bad guys

Looking forward to the American dialect coming to use the word “tariff” to describe a general dislike of something, similar to how they use “litigate” to describe discussing a contested topic.

Our election was not about Trump. Trump was a second-tier factor and not the main reason that the Coalition lost. Other countries outside of the US sometimes have politics which is in fact not about the US.

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.

Advance now in the awkward position of having to choose between saying they helped boost Labor’s vote or arguing against their own effectiveness 😆 #auspol #ausvotes2025

This is not really what happened, in my opinion. Trump was one among many factors in our election but I don't think it was the decisive one or even in the top three. Like most elections this was won and lost on domestic issues. Not everything is about the US.

Five former National Weather Service directors have taken the unusual step of signing onto an open letter warning that cuts to the organization by the Trump administration may soon endanger lives.

ALERT: I had not seen this article until this morning. It is a pretty big deal. Mike Waltz isn’t actually using Signal. He’s using a copy or third party version of Signal created by a company called TeleMessage the point of which is to allow archiving of messages. The app claims to preserve …

The breathless coverage of the mushroom poisoning case is gross and ghoulish. Real people died. Stop packaging other people's tragedies up as entertainment.

I'm not sure I buy the assumption that early voters are necessarily people who have already made up their minds, and the undecideds will vote on the day. There could be plenty of undecideds who want to get it out of the way and just pick one early. #auspol

A cashless society is a fragile, unprepared society. This goes double for countries prone to large-scale natural disasters which routinely knock out electricity and internet infrastructure like, oh, say, us. www.politico.eu/article/powe...
