The facts changed and they needed to update the segment. I’m not defending CBS writ large but this particular case doesn’t seem like capitulation, just the normal functioning of journalism

He was polling pretty well until the campaign started. Then they ran what I think most reasonable people would agree was a strikingly poor campaign based on few policies (several of which they backflipped on) and then they lost.

I think it's probably also just growing awareness and normalisation of it as an option. When most people you know vote on the day, you're more likely to vote on the day. When a lot of people you know vote early, and say it's easier, you're probably a lot more likely to vote early.
