The rainy hot season has kicked off in Japan. It’s 5:30pm, 30 Celsius and 78% humidity. On the train platform with me is a goth wearing black knitwear. He’s just taken out a matching black hand held electric fan. I admire both the dedication to style and the level of preparation.

Here I am explaining the details of the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft (an up-coming mission by JAXA to collect a sample from Phobos 🛰️) to a delegation from Switzerland who visited ISAS. And it is quite clear from their expressions that not a single person believes my tale 😂

I really like the #VR game, Raccoon Lagoon. I suspect similar to Animal Crossing, you help out an island of small inhabitants by gathering different resources. It’s an excellent example of extremely well done low-poly graphics, which are colourful and STUPIDLY cute. Look at this blue llama 🦙

At the Swiss Pavilion with JAXA at #EXPO2025, I helped with an event to BUILD A COMET! This celestial concoction involved dirt, soy sauce, and a ton of dry ice. Water condensation creates whiteness, whereas real comets are black (and don’t necessarily contain soy sauce, which represents organics 😂)

The Japan Pavilion at the #EXPO2025 was all about sustainability. The cutest room had Hello Kitty algae. Did you know that algae can absorb 14 times as much CO2 as a cedar tree? And produce 50 times as much protein as beef for the same amount of water? But could you eat these faces? Maybe yes.

New friend joined us for lunch at the ISAS canteen! This is the “Comet Interceptor” mission in Lego! The mission has a mothership developed by ESA and two small probes, one by ESA and one by JAXA. The plan is to take images from a bunch of angles of a long period comet (from the Oort Cloud, baby!).

#EXPO2025 includes signature pavilions such as null² by Japanese artist Ochiai Yoichi. The whole building is immersive art, with outer walls that vibrate due to an internal knocking mechanism, and 360 animations mimicking… an acid trip 😂 After, you view the new group through the one-way mirror walls

The USA Pavilion at the #EXPO2025 is both well done and sad. Images burst with diversity, advertise opportunities for overseas students, and proudly applaud scientific programs that are now decimated. With a mascot jingle about togetherness, this is a time capsule constructed in a different era.
