“Mother, thou hast forsaken me, and I know not how to descend.” And yes, I feel that I should be discouraging this cat food stealing family burglar operation. And yet… #NotCatsOfTheBalcony

Like dinosaurs, Saturn and Jupiter roamed They sculpted this system that humans call home The gas giants roared, the system unstable An ice giant planet fell right off the table! A whole ring of comets was launched to the stars The planets — bombarded — still bear the scars.

Last year, I wrote five feature articles, gave 16 presentations, published two peer-reviewed papers, and squeezed blood from stones to coordinate the international exhibits of the asteroid grains. JAXA review: You made adequate achievements 😐 (It's expressed a little better in Japanese 😂)

…. Ah. #NotCatsOfTheBalcony

Action shot from my talk at "From Stars to Life"! I'm talking about the international public exhibits of the grains from asteroid Ryugu, and how the work to ensure no contamination from the Earth's environment began even before the launch of the Hayabusa2 spacecraft 🛰️🔭.

At the "From Stars to Life" (RalPosium) conference today 🔭, we tried out the virtual space and took a walk on asteroid Ryugu with the Hayabusa2 spacecraft 🛰️! And clearly, this meet is about to drop the summer's hottest new album.

My cousin is visiting Tokyo, and she was hoping to buy a a Japanese painting (or other artwork) on a scroll. Any ideas where you might be able to get something like that? 🤔

Article title: "Temperate Earth-sized Planet" Article text: "It is at least 50 C warmer than Earth and the floor is lava."

(With full credit to the team who fixed this issue quickly 🔨) What is the #1 tip for a successful hybrid conference? Have one person on-site whose entire job is to MONITOR THE ZOOM FOR EVERY TALK. We are all now expecting a dark and silent world. We don't need zoom to visualise that horror.

This week, I'm attending the "RalPosium"! A conference to celebrate the career of Ralph Pudritz (McMaster University) who was my postdoctoral advisor. And yes, I totally helped to come up with that name. That might be my biggest contribution to this entire meeting, if not to Ralph's career 😐

This puzzle board is not up to #NorahNeko calico smarts 😼

Me: Composes multiple replies to an anticipated email, questioning competence, knowledge of basic geography, and ambition compared to a dead echidna, while searching out six new jobs on LinkedIn. Receives a document that is entirely reasonable. Me: Quietly places pitchfork back under the table.

Introducing...your sneak peek at the cosmos captured by NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory! Can you guess these regions of sky? This is just a small peek...join us at 11am US EDT for your full First Look at how Rubin will #CaptureTheCosmos! 🔭🧪 #RubinFirstLook ls.st/rubin-first-look-livestream

I've stared at this image for 15 mins. Magnificent (credit: NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory) 🧪 More images here (and I suspect, many more to come) nsf.widencollective.com/portals/qx86...

This but—hear me out—instead of a small workspace, you just get drenched in freezing mist. OK, so the changes in temperature might cause far more problems than solutions, but it’d feel AWESOME before you died of heat stroke / double pleurisy.

The ball mural at the tennis courts this month celebrates the double victory in singles and doubles of Kamiji Yui, the left-handed wheelchair tennis player, at Roland-Garros (French Open)!

I’ve given up on temperatures below 30°C (and night temperatures below mid-20s) and have taken my duvet to the coin laundry for a wash before packing it away. So long, blanket cloud! I hope I will see you again before November, but rather doubt it because the climate is completely screwed 😐

I’m supposed to be presenting at an international lounge, bribed with British scones made by @jason.jagaimo.com at Nokucheese. But the laptop bag may be forgotten in the excitement of scones, and the scones may be devoured enroute. Hey, I tried. But probably shouldn’t have been trusted.

When you’re taking an online language class, but someone feels that your unused hands could be employed in a really good butt scratch. #NorahNeko

We may have smashed into the mid-30s in June but… the supermarket is selling Gachapin and Mukku (Japanese children TV characters) summer-themed toilet roll!

The rainy hot season has kicked off in Japan. It’s 5:30pm, 30 Celsius and 78% humidity. On the train platform with me is a goth wearing black knitwear. He’s just taken out a matching black hand held electric fan. I admire both the dedication to style and the level of preparation.

A salesman from the COOP home delivery supermarket appeared at my door. I did my upmost to discourage with my terrible Japanese but I have no defence against someone prepared to persevere 😅 Now I have a follow-up scheduled and… a small carton of baby food, possibly reflecting my language ability 🧐

....meanwhile, in Chile....the 39-meter (128-feet) Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) project is humming along. Note the white pickup truck in the upper left, for scale. Amazing.

Here I am explaining the details of the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft (an up-coming mission by JAXA to collect a sample from Phobos 🛰️) to a delegation from Switzerland who visited ISAS. And it is quite clear from their expressions that not a single person believes my tale 😂

I really like the #VR game, Raccoon Lagoon. I suspect similar to Animal Crossing, you help out an island of small inhabitants by gathering different resources. It’s an excellent example of extremely well done low-poly graphics, which are colourful and STUPIDLY cute. Look at this blue llama 🦙

When you nearly tumble out of bed in the morning, due to someone somehow managing to take up the entire mattress 😂 #NorahNeko

At the Swiss Pavilion with JAXA at #EXPO2025, I helped with an event to BUILD A COMET! This celestial concoction involved dirt, soy sauce, and a ton of dry ice. Water condensation creates whiteness, whereas real comets are black (and don’t necessarily contain soy sauce, which represents organics 😂)

The Japan Pavilion at the #EXPO2025 was all about sustainability. The cutest room had Hello Kitty algae. Did you know that algae can absorb 14 times as much CO2 as a cedar tree? And produce 50 times as much protein as beef for the same amount of water? But could you eat these faces? Maybe yes.

New friend joined us for lunch at the ISAS canteen! This is the “Comet Interceptor” mission in Lego! The mission has a mothership developed by ESA and two small probes, one by ESA and one by JAXA. The plan is to take images from a bunch of angles of a long period comet (from the Oort Cloud, baby!).

#EXPO2025 includes signature pavilions such as null² by Japanese artist Ochiai Yoichi. The whole building is immersive art, with outer walls that vibrate due to an internal knocking mechanism, and 360 animations mimicking… an acid trip 😂 After, you view the new group through the one-way mirror walls
