In comms (both academic + practice), there's a basic tenet: perception is reality.
Framing is a crucial element for how we, on receipt of communications, build or establish our perceptions.

I totally agree re: reality tv as a conduit, but believe it started with WWE (founded as Capitol Wrestling Corp in 1953), a precursor to "reality" TV.

Why the hell is anyone getting a trophy for finishing fifth or sixth? After third, they're just all swimming in the same damn pool, literally + figuratively. Swim faster and harder, hun, if you want to place w/ praise and glory.
Too many mediocre people think they are special and deserve more.

...and those who marched, the oppressed didn't respond with violence.
The apolitical and "normies" are more sympathetic to non-violent causes. Win their hearts and minds, or risk entrenched apathy from 90M registered voters who opted out in 2024. Move, influence *them*, not the sociopaths.

Generally speaking, violence in response to violence is just more violence.
Ask a rape survivor what it feels like to confide in someone who reacts that they're going to go kill the rapist (& in some cases actually attempts/takes revenge). I'm here to tell you: *it* *does* *not* *help*.

Correct, protest is theater. It works well when the drama leads to empathy from *outside* your group (ie, not ICE or Trump admin but the apolitical, "normies") in support of your cause. Otherwise, it's just a fight. What's achieved? Protest, YES, but always peacefully. Win hearts and minds.

I'm a Democrat with strong progressive values (ie, not a centrist). Yet, the ill-informed dribble directed at you on here beggars belief.
Fools to the left, jokers to the right (wonders to self if this is musical provocation)
Appreciate your time + engagement here, plus your MA sense of humor.

Btw, did you know that in 2016, HRC improved on Obama's 2012 performance in TX?
I'm the daughter of a USMC vet--never going to spoil a ballot unless everyone on it is a criminal. Every opp I get, I'll vote for someone I don't like over "an affront to humanity."

I disagree re: HRC. I voted for Warren in 2020 primary, although it was pretty much a done deal for Biden. And then I voted for Biden in the general like my life depended on it. As much as I like and respect AOC, I don't believe she can win a national election--would be happy to be proven wrong.

One of my closest friends is from/lives again in Houston. A former client is hq'd in Dallas, where I traveled a minimum of 4 times a year for 6 years. I understand the frustration, but there are pockets of blue, which is presumably why Ken Martin, 2025 DNC chair, visited TX in Feb after elected.

Correlation is not causation.
In the same vein, I could also make the argument that Sanders supporters didn't support HRC but did support Biden because of misogyny.
Funny thing that, eh?

Blame that on the shitty voters in TX, then.
(I dont really believe that, but see how that works both ways?)

FWIW, I started out +Sanders, but didn't vote for him in the primary b/c 1) by the time NJ votes, a candidate is all but official & 2) I reviewed his Senate record. He'd never sponsored a single bill that had passed; good ideas are not enough.
I kept that to myself to avoid influencing others.

If you complained about her policies and tactics on social, it will have been amplified (how social works). You may have influenced people in swing states. You (and everyone else) do not exist in a vacuum on social.

Yes, I understand the math, thanks; I was a TA for a stats course in grad school.
Out of curiosity, in the lead-up to the 2016 election, did you share on social media that you weren't going to vote for HRC?

I'm not a centrist, but I *am* pragmatic and sadly agree. Would it be great to have UHC? Yes. But I'm not going to spoil my vote simply because I didn't get my way, especially as I (cis hetero white woman) have little on the line compared to others. My parents taught me not to behave like ...

It's interesting that you believe HRC is worse than the "affront to humanity," but hey-ho!

Neither Biden nor Obama won TX either. Did you vote for both of them by chance? How about Harris?

Women lost, as a federal protection, the right to choose. Just one example, of course, of things lost under Trump Round 1.
Yet you have no regrets. Thank you for continuing to prioritize your wounded ego.

My employer sets the expectation among employees that "feedback is a gift." Stuff like that can get out of hand quickly and can easily carry over into personal lives.
+social media, of course...

Fair enough. I work in marketing w/ MA Comms so see "strategic comms" and brain goes straight to X. There are alternatives to Starlink, though mostly European companies. SpaceX is a great case study why space should be nationalized, not driven by profit motive. Not helpful in the short term, though.

It's covert male depression. My dad (Union carpenter, USMC vet) had it as a result of his upbringing. I got him in therapy 20 years ago, and while his relationships aren't perfect, they're vastly improved. Every adult American should read Terry Real's work on it. books.google.com/books/about/...

100% this and in answer to that question, absolutely NOT. And I felt that way before the election, which is why I voted for the grown-up running for POTUS. Voters need to grow up, too.
