people need to internalize, very quickly, that federal research grants are a hypercompetitive contracting process not charity, and that what Uncle Sam gets in return for that money is American dominance in the future

This is what I try to live up to, every day of my life

Pushback works

As a person, I agree, an autism registry is a five alarm fire.

This is really good, and maybe it will reach you at the right moment.

Sunday Access Checkin. What’s one of your favorite accessibility features and why. Or, what’s an accessibility feature you wish you knew about sooner or wish more people knew about in general. Or how can people help meet your access needs. Can be online or offline. Would love to learn + share stuff.

A little while ago, my parents' cat Bridget went missing. As the weeks dragged on, they became extremely worried. My dad devised a way to distract himself: he began to paint Bridget's adventures, imagining her travelling through time and popping up in some of art and music's most iconic scenes.

We all have a role to play. The key is knowing what your strengths are and then taking that to 11 and leaning in to where you work best. There's no one thing that needs doing in the climate crisis or in fighting fascism. There are a million things. Find yours.

Corey Booker, a moment ago, after 22+ hours on his feet, compellingly : ‘Who are we, if you don’t think this is a moral moment where the character of our country is being tested?’

A while ago a lovely German man appeared at our church. He came a few times to look around during our Saturday opening hours, before asking if the piano abandoned in the corner worked. I told him it was horrendously out of tune, and the cathedral piano tuner had deemed it not worth sorting out.

Jesus Christ.

being an indie bookseller in the helltimes has felt both very stable and very stabilizing, and part of me wishes everyone could be on my side of the counter for a little while, because I think it would help some of you be a little less cynical and doomy right now. so here is my VERY anecdotal data:

Worker ownership is an effective model for local ownership and democratic control. Rather than having businesses shut down or sold to distant shareholders and corporate entities, they can be transferred to the workers themselves, allowing for jobs and profits to remain in their communities.

Chuck Schumer was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. Eventually the wheel of karma will turn again in the favor of sensible people, but God, am I tired of waiting.

One columnist, a professional pundit, is living in a paranoid delusion. The other, a sociologist, is living in America.

Dr. Nirav Shah, Maine’s former CDC director and a top federal health official during the Biden administration, is returning to Maine to launch a public health education program at Colby College.

It’s hard to reconcile the “they’ll go after ideologies they don’t like next” talk with the fact they’ve been openly targeting a whole suite of them associated with Black scholarship already. They’ve already threatened to defund any university teaching critical race theory. Why doesn’t that count?

they’re disappearing dissidents, i do not want to see one fucking sentence in your little op ed about “the illiberal left” or “the techniques of wokeness being worryingly exercised by the state” i swear to god

Great news!

once again I have to invoke the specter of Ronald Wilson Reagan, who is in Hell now. under Reagan, the term "government spending" was effectively demonized. fuck you, Reaganite ghouls! spending money, on its people and their needs, is the function of government! public works are good! say so!

The smallest (and most delicate) of discoveries from our ongoing dig at Winterborne Kingston #Dorset is this 40mm long Iron Age sewing needle Carved from animal bone just over 2,000 years ago 😍 📷 June 2016 #FindsFriday

Can we please stop with the "why aren't Americans doing anything" Discourse that I keep seeing? I'm not even talking about people in other countries. I'm talking about my fellow USians who I see every day On Here bemoaning how we aren't protesting. 1. PROTESTS ARE LITERALLY HAPPENING EVERY DAY.

A German word for being embarrassed by the actions of someone else is Fremdscham, or “foreign shame.” A similar word from Icelandic is aulahrollur, which is quite tricky to translate but basically means something along the lines of “cringe quake” or “douchebag chills”

Gregg is a former Marine and Forest Service ranger. He's saved the lives of hikers dangling off a cliff or going through cardiac arrest, and he's bravely fought forest fires to save small rural towns. 100% of his salary is paid by WA state. Elon fired him. Share his story.

This Pennsylvania county stopped charging people 'lodging fees' for the time they spent in jail. Then commissioners voted to forgive over $65 million in these fees. “What a light of hope this has been,” said one woman whose son owed $17,000. boltsmag.org/jail-de...

This is how it’s done.

“this is about whether a President can force compliance with his will, without regard for the rule of law that governs our nation. I believe he cannot." —Maine Governor Janet Mills

Just got out of jail. Only forty four left to go to catch John Lewis’s record. Remember - peaceful civil disobedience. Don’t comply in advance.

Fascinating profile of a park ranger in San Francisco who works with unhoused residents and has adopted the novel tactic of treating them like human beings, building relationships, and helping them access resources on their own timeline.

Government’s wins are often invisible: Systems that avoid plane crashes; alliances that avert war; surveillance that prevent pandemics. Government wins are often *the avoidance of loss.* So how do we tell the story of the destruction of government? The story of future losses *not* averted?

Key line from ED Dept "Dear Colleague" letter: "This guidance does not have the force and effect of law and does not bind the public or create new legal standards." Ed.gov/media/109506 Letter coercively threatens fed. funding based on misstatements of law. States can't just ignore but must resist.

⚡️ The historic moment of Estonia leaving the Russian-fed power grid. On February 8, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia left Russia and Belarus energy system. By the end of the day today, they will have joined the European grid.

We’re focused on feeding our kids. Investing in our schools. Making sure child care is affordable. Regardless of the chaos unfolding in Washington, we’re making Minnesota the best state for kids to grow up.

Of course it’s a coup. Miss the obvious, lose your republic. open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p...

Today’s front page of the largest newspaper in Quebec, Canada and they nailed it 🤣🎯

honestly think some of the hesitation here is that no one wants to sound like a crank. i was talking at an event last night and even i felt like a crank while i was speaking!

Packed house in Salem, OR for Town Hall with Senator Jeff Merkeley and Representative Andrea Salinas.

Normalize being nice.

"I had not touched a cat in 15 years when an orange kitten wandered over to sit with me in the grass one day. I was left without adequate words to describe that experience. It reminded me that I am alive."
