Countries must cooperate to seize a once-in-a-generation opportunity to become the top destination for scientists, says Maria M. Mota https://go.nature.com/43MdLse

The NASA planetary science fleet chart if the president’s budget is enacted.

The biggest gift the US can give to its global rivals is to ideologically motivated slashing investment in scientific, biomedical and technological research and innovation and driving away talent abroad.

To put these top-line budget numbers in context, cuts of this magnitude would effectively mean no new grants in FY2026. The entire extramural budget would go to existing, continuing grants. An abject failure of American ambition. And a betrayal of our global leadership in health science innovation.

I urge everyone to read Unbreaking’s new page on everything the govt is doing to destroy & diminish medical research funding. It’s the best thing I’ve read on this topic: @lizneeley.bsky.social & co have such done an incredible job. unbreaking.org/issues/medic...

NSF proposed budget to Congress would see NSF BIO to get a 71.5% cut. Across all of NSF, they expect the funding rate go down from 24% to 6%. If this is approved, this will be the death to basic science in the United States. Call your reps! nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/00-NSF...

I am doing my part in a public town hall tomorrow in Bozeman.

We, i.e. mainly @quantaofgeorge.bsky.social, for 1st time directly compared Raman microspectroscopy and NanoSIMS for single cell isotope probing. Conclusion: results from the 2 approaches compare well with each other allowing cross-technique comparisons. Choice of ion for SIMS matters. #microsky 🦠🧪

XKCD’s take on archaea

Great piece

Excellent, exhaustive, and frightening summary of the attacks by the Trump regime.

The US Administration has indefinitely blocked *all* student visa applicants from getting a visa interview. Worldwide, unconditional, no end date. All. International students are crucial to the US university system, American innovation, and future US prosperity.

The kind of shite I have to put into annual reports these days. Are we more efficient yet?

*US ORDERS HALT TO STUDENT VISA INTERVIEWS: POLITICO

The title of the story any news outlet should run is “Trump administration wants 7 million US citizens to die”

Science is an economic driver in Hamilton, Mont., thanks to Rocky Mountain Laboratories, a federal research lab. Now, layoffs and funding cuts are having an impact in this town far from Washington.

If you have benefited from science and live in the US, please consider signing @standupforscience.bsky.social open letter regarding the EO issued on May 23rd! www.standupforscience.net/open-letter-...

In an emotional tribute, Trump thanked the fallen foot specialists who bravely risked their medical licenses so that others facing military service could be free.

This isn’t about ensuring history is “based on facts.” It’s about making sure history aligns with this administration’s narrative. The Trump administration has ordered every national park to post signs encouraging visitors to report anything

Vance straight up admitting they are destroying American science because scientists don’t vote for his party.

“If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.” – George Washington

I appreciate the offers from other scientists to help Harvard (students, labs, etc) through this attack, but what would be most helpful is for you to use your position to contact your elected representatives and make it clear this fight isn't just Harvard, it will affect you, and their districts too

What?!?! The EPA has drafted a plan to eliminate all pollution controls from coal and gas-fired power plants. The agency claims these plants “do not contribute significantly” to dangerous pollution or climate change, arguing their emissions are a small and declining share of global totals.

Haha 😂 Trump holds up images from a conflict in the Congo to justify importing white South Africans, claiming there’s “genocide.” Never mind that the photos aren’t even from South Africa and some of these migrants are openly posting antisemitic content online.

The Economist on the end to US leadership in science.

The fascism playbook hasn't changed—only the speed we're flipping through its chapters.

The US does not stand for freedom and democracy any more, but is sliding fast into tyranny. Harvard is punished for standing up to this. If you’re in the US and not doing something now, soon you will be unable to do anything. We know this from experience here in Germany.
