I really wonder what it takes to get the Dems of their asses and do something. I guess they are happy just fundraising against Trump and not do something because that means they can raise more funds.

Don't tell Trump, but the best revenge on Elon would be to fully restore all the NIH and NSF funding that DOGE cut. Ultimate spite move

My Canadian university, Queen's, is offering TWENTY 4-year funded PhDs (40k CAD/yr) for a student of ANY citizenship who has been accepted at a top 100 US university but have had offer rescinded OR are reconsidering offer due to US policy. Details found here👇 www.queensu.ca/grad-postdoc...

Proud to present the lab's latest work. The full structure of the sodium translocating methyltransferase (Mtr) bound to a small oxygen-responsive small protein MtrI. Work by Tristan and together with @schmitzstreitslab.bsky.social . www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.06.02.657420v1

📢 Big day for archaeal microbiology! Today, we jointly shed light on the mysterious world of archaeal extracellular vesicles from human gut archaea - published in @natcomms.nature.com ‬ in parallel with our precious colleagues around @mkrupovic.bsky.social 🇦🇹🤝🇫🇷.

Our latest work is out - here, our own Dr. Sarah Eßer compares transcriptomic patterns of Altiarchaeum in Crystal Geyser (US) and the Muehlbacher sufidic spring (Germany)! 🧬 Read more below: enviromicro-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Esp but not only if you have or teach children, please read this piece. It's a terrifying example of how generative AI is working RN. I'll say it again: there is no way for schools to teach students how to use AI ethically and responsibly. That's like saying we can teach them how to use heroin.

I love this quote from Ralf Wolfe: "I have formulated a few truisms that I refer to as Wolfe's Laws of Thermodynamics: 1st Law: Unpublished data do not improve with age. 2nd Law: If you are first on the scene, it is easy to make discoveries. 3rd Law: The emotion generated in scientific discussion...

Countries must cooperate to seize a once-in-a-generation opportunity to become the top destination for scientists, says Maria M. Mota https://go.nature.com/43MdLse

The NASA planetary science fleet chart if the president’s budget is enacted.

The biggest gift the US can give to its global rivals is to ideologically motivated slashing investment in scientific, biomedical and technological research and innovation and driving away talent abroad.

To put these top-line budget numbers in context, cuts of this magnitude would effectively mean no new grants in FY2026. The entire extramural budget would go to existing, continuing grants. An abject failure of American ambition. And a betrayal of our global leadership in health science innovation.

I urge everyone to read Unbreaking’s new page on everything the govt is doing to destroy & diminish medical research funding. It’s the best thing I’ve read on this topic: @lizneeley.bsky.social & co have such done an incredible job. unbreaking.org/issues/medic...

NSF proposed budget to Congress would see NSF BIO to get a 71.5% cut. Across all of NSF, they expect the funding rate go down from 24% to 6%. If this is approved, this will be the death to basic science in the United States. Call your reps! nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/00-NSF...

I am doing my part in a public town hall tomorrow in Bozeman.

We, i.e. mainly @quantaofgeorge.bsky.social, for 1st time directly compared Raman microspectroscopy and NanoSIMS for single cell isotope probing. Conclusion: results from the 2 approaches compare well with each other allowing cross-technique comparisons. Choice of ion for SIMS matters. #microsky 🦠🧪

XKCD’s take on archaea

Great piece

Excellent, exhaustive, and frightening summary of the attacks by the Trump regime.

The US Administration has indefinitely blocked *all* student visa applicants from getting a visa interview. Worldwide, unconditional, no end date. All. International students are crucial to the US university system, American innovation, and future US prosperity.

The kind of shite I have to put into annual reports these days. Are we more efficient yet?
