Ah, the folly of youth—spending one’s meagre fortune on cassettes while others squandered theirs on romance. But what is love compared to a well-sung high C?

Brava! I adore all these recordings - and some more👏

This kind of dive into historical recordings is exactly what makes Bluesky such a great place for opera lovers! I’d love to see more posts like this! Your insights and the archival details add so much value. Grazie mille!

Parole che rispecchiano l’arte e l’anima di Zeffirelli: passione, generosità e rispetto per il talento. Un maestro che ha reso il mondo più bello con la sua visione.

I love all four renditions, but Giulietta Simionato wins my heart every time. Her voice has that perfect balance of drama and elegance – truly a mesmerising Ulrica! Thank you for sharing these incredible gems.

Lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu! After a few years away, I’ve returned to the practice, and the journey feels expansive once more. So great to see you here, Jessica—sending love and light!

Too perfect to be real, or just AI playing with our sense of wonder?

A choice both maddening and magnificent—silence, the final luxury.

Each king wears his crown differently, but Martti wields the sceptre with the grandest authority.

It was the kind of evening where reality dissolved into sequins & regret, and I’m not sure I’ve quite recovered. Sondheim’s genius, performed at this level, is both a gift & a wound. Have you seen Follies live? Did you feel the urge to drape yourself in velvet and lament lost youth over a martini?

If you love Sondheim, classic musicals, or just world-class theatre—do NOT miss this. Six performances only, and it deserves to be seen far beyond Melbourne. #Follies #VictorianOpera #Sondheim #TheatreMagic

Drenched in operatic sublimity, Heidi’s One More Kiss is an unforgettable vocal blend of long-admired soprano Merlyn Quaife and Nina Korbe as her young counterpart in a tenderly realised highlight. @reviewmusical.bsky.social

And let’s talk about Broadway Baby—83-year-old Geraldene Morrow brought the house down with the kind of show-stopping pizzazz that reminds you exactly why we go to the theatre. @broadwayworld.bsky.social

Losing My Mind was devastating, Who’s That Woman? an electrifying showstopper, and I’m Still Here was pure theatre magic. @westendmusicals.bsky.social

Marina Prior’s Phyllis was a revelation, Antoinette Halloran’s Sally broke my heart, and the legendary Rhonda Burchmore, Geraldene Morrow, and Anne Wood had the audience in the palm of their hands. @thesondheimhub.bsky.social

Hear, hear @redrob59.bsky.social 👏 I’m going to listen again now - I remember Seefried having some wonderfully emotional moments - and Jochum 🤩

Congrats on an unforgettable premiere @rufus-wainwright.bsky.social ! It sounds like a truly moving night with an incredible team - Bravo!

For a conductor’s vision that masterfully balances precision & spontaneity, Jochum delivers compelling momentum and ensemble cohesion. Haefliger, Prey, Merriman & Fischer-Dieskau shine. Despite Seefried’s vocal decline, her phrasing and diction remain remarkable. Available @prestomusic.bsky.social

Rufus, your Melbourne show was spellbinding – heartbreak and hope reverberated in every note. Even with the weight of home present, you gave us everything. Don’t let it be too long before you return. 💛🇦🇺

I’ve also got the Rostropovich/Vishnevskaya recording in my collection. It’s such an interesting interpretation—how do you think it compares to other classic recordings of Tosca?

I’ve got the Sinopoli/Freni recording on my desk, waiting to be listened to. How did it rate in your survey?

Absolutely agree, Karajan’s 1970s Beethoven cycle is pure magic! The richness of the Berlin Philharmonic under his baton is unmatched. A well-deserved Grammy win and definitely one of the greatest Beethoven cycles ever recorded.

Will you break our hearts gently or set them on fire? Either way, we’re ready to be undone tonight in Melbourne 🩵

The dolcezza of Freni & Pavarotti’s voices here! Schippers brings an incredible vibrancy & sensitivity that perfectly frames the singers while driving the drama forward. Comparing it to Karajan’s recording, there’s a thrilling immediacy here that captures the verismo spirit of La Bohème. Bravo! 👏

Despite the summer sun here, The Snowman remains a holiday ritual in our household. Briggs’s artistry transcends seasons, weaving a quiet enchantment that never fades. I hope you enjoyed every magical moment!

That snooty review rings a bell—I was an opera newbie, devouring everything back then. But ahh, Cossotto—rich, plum-like sound and torrents of power! It’s definitely not too late to dive in—she’s worth it. Maybe her Santuzza too.

And Jacob Diamond was pure muse last night at the Forum—haunting, heartfelt, and otherworldly. Bay of Fleas was a standout, lingering in the air like a dream. A perfect prelude to Meg Washington’s brilliance. #JacobDiamond #BayOfFleas #AussieMusic #LiveAtTheForum #AustralianIndie

How to Make Gravy dares to wear its heart on its sleeve—and in a world full of cynicism, that’s no small thing. Sure, it’s not gritty realism, but not every story needs to be. This film leans into the symbolic, with moments that stay with you. Don’t let the snark put you off. Give it a go.
