I suspect that fact that the vast majority of LLM users don’t seem to have received this (really very simple!) message is because the AI companies have a vested interest in us not understanding it. “ChatGPT is smart, it just makes mistakes sometimes” is much more marketable than the truth.

Scientists once hoarded pre-nuclear steel, and now we’re hoarding pre-AI content arstechnica.com/ai/2025/06/w...

#Servicetweet #Iran #Israel

🚨 There’s a lot of horrific news out of Washington right now—but you might have missed this: Senate Republicans just introduced a plan to sell off 120 million acres of our public lands. Let me break down what’s in the bill and why it’s a full-scale land grab. 🧵

Every machine in a Hospital that diagnoses your body without cutting you open is based on a principle of Physics, discovered by a Physicist who had no interest in Medicine. If you think the world doesn’t need Basic Science, or that somehow Science has failed you, think again.

If you want to have black walnuts on Christmas you should start fermenting now (traditionally before Johannis, June 24th)

I don't know much about the account itself, but they've been posting increasingly large numbers with zero references to them. Where do they come from? Who's doing the cointing? Is this even real? My point? Skepticism, always, and *especially * when the conclusion is in your favor.

🧪 I hate this so fucking much. For so many reasons. (Link to audio file of simulated podcast episode 🤮 summarizing the paper is in the paper) academic.oup.com/eurjcn/advan...

“Tesla’s driverless ‘robotaxis’ could launch in Austin as soon as June 22. But a demo in Austin today showed a $TSLA, manually driven to test its Full Self-Driving system, failed to stop for a child-sized dummy at a school bus—and hit it.” @cbsaustin @velez_tx

Now I've had a chance to read Andrea Sella's article in @chemistryworld.com on why he returned his Royal Society Faraday Medal. I recommend that you read it too. It's inspiring, though inevitably also disturbing, in these troubled times. www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/why-...

How artists are fighting back against AI. This is rather cool. There is a cloaking tool that creates "poisonous images" within images to prevent AI from using them as training data. scilogs.spektrum.de/hlf/artists-...

@sellathechemist.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy, a @ucl.ac.uk chemistry professor, has returned his 2014 Michael Faraday Prize to protest the @royalsociety.org's failure to take more decisive (or any) action against Elon Musk for his attack on science. 👏

"Large language models do not, cannot, and will not 'understand' anything at all. They are not emotionally intelligent or smart in any meaningful or recognizably human sense of the word." 🧪🤖 [gift link]

So, to be clear, Musk has now admitted he funded a man he believes to be a pedophile to be president. And Trump has now admitted that he gave access to high level government secrets to a man he believes to be a big time drug addict. This should be *the* story on the Sunday shows tomorrow.

I've seen folks talk about how "in four years" they'll be able to get back to their planned projects and I really don't think that's going to work out. People & projects losing funding now will not be able to hit pause and come back once funding is restored. Hard-won progress & capacity will be lost

First paper of Andreas (open access). Congrats! @chemunicologne.bsky.social @unicologne.bsky.social 🧪 link.springer.com/article/10.1...

It’s sort of funny the article stops short of drawing the obvious conclusion: RFK asked an LLM to cook up a phony report supporting his crackpot notions, and it churned out the usual slop full of hallucinated citations.

I know it's not very helpful, but I find myself thinking about those who criticized Nature's and Scientific American's Harris endorsement on the grounds that "science should stay out of politics." I think about those people quite a lot.
