Hm, I think I have a new favourite pulp hero in Johnny Black. He appeared in several short stories by L. Sprague de Camp back in the late 1930s, the first of Johnny's stories featuring him saving the world from a mad scientist who didn't count on a literal intelligent bear deciding to foil his plan.
