John “Don’t Panic” Morales, an icon in Florida weather/hurricanes, is telling everyone they’ll have a lot to panic about if the proposed cuts to U.S. science go through. Call. Your. Reps.

this is so stupid hard but also so stupid necessary. i fail every day at it but it's the only way out of this mess without some really, really, REALLY bad things happening.

ok not sure i need this level of push notification detail @pfrazee.com

Remembering this trans man for Pride. Mexican Revolutionary Amelio Robles Ávila, who threatened to shoot anyone who misgendered him and said "he did not want to die without being known as a man,” lived his life as a man after transitioning. One of Zapata’s top commanders. We have always been here.

Back in 2018 I saw the original neon "Silence = Death" sign in DC. One of my most profound queer experiences. Political parties, corporations, and cops do not belong at pride. If they feel excluded, they should contemplate their history of discrimination and harm.

The interesting thing about people dragging the folks in that NYT piece who said that they didn’t vote for moms to get deported is that the article is about how these women are organizing for a member of their community, aggressively and openly, and actually, that’s good.

Jodi Ernst doubles down on her "we're all going to die" re Medicaid cuts: Walking through a cemetery: "I made an incorrect assumption that everyone in the auditorium understood that yes, we're all going to perish...I'm really glad I did not have to bring up the subject of the tooth fairy as well."

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Around 1,000 people gathered Saturday morning at Santa Cruz Main Beach to spell out the word “Resist!” The event, organized by Indivisible Santa Cruz County, aimed to protest the Trump administration and celebrate Santa Cruz Pride’s 50th anniversary.

Regardless of one’s position on abortion, this is legally correct.

In case people are amazed/confuses/shocked/whatever by the devastating cuts proposed for US science, technology, and innovation, please remember that autocrats always go after three main targets: 1️⃣ Media 2️⃣ Courts 3️⃣ Academics It’s literally textbook and, yes, it’s happening in the US.

It's hard today not to see these as graphs of my career. For 25 years, I've trained, worked, supported and mentored with competitively awarded funding from NSF, and recently NIH and NASA. You don't have to think I'm amazing, but this is all of us. Somebody please stop this from happening!

Proposed cut to NSF Biology budget is 70%. 70%. Seventy. Call your senators & reps nonstop. Give them numbers on NSF impact for state/district. tableau.external.nsf.gov/views/NSFbyN... explain this will decimate the economy if their districts, especially if it has a major research univ. 🧪

The federal government depended on universities to do fundamental research on the cheap, train the next generation of researchers and skilled industry workers, and transfer promising tech into the larger economy. Let’s acknowledge who depended on who to execute necessary R&D work in this country.

I don't think anyone outside of universities, pharma and biotech, independent research institutions have any idea of what is happening right now. If you haven't sounded the alarm among your friends, family and colleagues, now is the time to do it.

Heavily armed paramilitary forces stormed a local San Diego restaurant today, deployed stun grenades against a crowd of onlookers, and kidnapped a handful of kitchen workers.

🚨🚨 Friday night news drop from National Science Foundation!! 🧪 NSF just released its detailed budget request for next year: nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/00-NSF... We knew it was going to be bad...and it lives up. Guts direct NSF support for a **quarter million people** 🧵 on some highlights...

How bad will it be? Catastrophic. Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come. But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget. Speak up now before it is too late. (inflation adjusted $-s below)

With or without Elon, the march of terminations continues at #NSF and #NIH, with 31 new terminations in the past week, plus dozens more from earlier weeks that we've surfaced. - NSF: 1,669 grants worth $1.5B - NIH: 2,182 grants, worth $9.7B, $4.9B, 79 restored/in limbo

Congratulations to @sebdalgarno.bsky.social and collaborators on the @joss-openjournals.bsky.social publication of their software suite for analyzing Boreal caribou survival & recruitment! A great set of packages for my first editing experience at JOSS!

I heard a lot of this thinking from conservative White Evangelicals I interviewed about Covid. They knew they and others might die, but they didn't care. Because they figured if they died, they'd go to heaven sooner. And they figured if non-believers died and couldn't go to heaven, that's on them.

I respond to AEI’s mischaracterization of three of my papers AND discuss the clear evidence that work requirements don’t increase work, but do reduce food assistance for households that need it.

The flood of encomiums and morality tales about Elon's turn in Washington cldn't be more predictable, vapid & sickening. If you want a story, get me the story about the crisis comms team directing this. He ran anti-constitutional blitzkrieg thru the federal government, did massive harm, violated ...

whole op-ed by david brooks is very good but this bit in particular I think is spot on. Or to summarize it even further: there are a lot of people who are patriots and a lot of people who are nationalists, and I think too often folks get those two confused. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/29/o...

🧵 the reality that systems and institutions you are supposed rely on are fragile is never a welcome lesson but it can be offset by the recognition that there are effective and long-standing models for organizing and resisting their dismantling.

(you + me + all our science friends)yelling about science = flood the zone @standupforscience.bsky.social #SummerfightforScience

Our institutions were never going to save us; they’ve just expanded the demographics of who they’re failing. I’m seeing a lot of people radicalized for the first time as the scales fall from their eyes. The key is not to become cynical, but to use that energy to liberate one another.

🔥 New article, led by our founder: Trump’s Fool’s Gold Science EO lets political appointees loyal to him label research they don’t like as misconduct — and punish scientists who don’t fall in line with his agenda. The time to take action is NOW. (1/2)➡️ www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

"Under the terms of the executive order, political appointees loyal to the president can willfully find justification to label any research finding as scientific misconduct" This should terrify every single scientist in America.

Are you a PI of a federal grant cancelled by the Trump administration? Please share your info with the Democratic Staff of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, who launched this portal yesterday to track funding cancellations 🔭🧪 forms.office.com/pages/respon...

The bipartisan framing of Chinese people as dangerous to the United States has been building up for years and has created this deeply racist and xenophobic opening for the Trump administration. I stand with my Chinese colleagues and all of our Chinese students. 🧪

My essay for America's Quarterly: "Invasive New U.S. Visa Rules Hurt Americans Too." "Visa applications requiring extensive social media and biographical information are a hurdle to scientific collaboration, with vast consequences." Note: I wrote this in 2017. 1/n 🧪

Today, we received notice that our team’s last remaining NSF grant was terminated. For the first time since 2009, when I received an NSF Fellowship for Graduate Research, I have no active NSF grants.

ok I feel completely insane asking this but like weren't we NOT blowing up rockets, like, 50 years ago. weren't we successfully sending rockets up that did not rattle apart. also weren't we like "ah yeah that was a fail" when the rocket fell apart instead of calling it a "partial success"
