Nobody should be surprised by this. It’s been case for a long time now - and isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s just reflective of modern society. And to be honest, the UK becoming less obsessed with social class is probably healthy! Class no longer main dividing line in UK politics, survey shows

Hello from Tromsø at midnight sun time. (I know it’s not very sunny but you get the idea).

So much for the faster passport control which Starmer promised. No access to the e-gates here at Gardemoen.

I think there’d be an argument for having a new shared airport for Edinburgh and Glasgow if for nothing else, it wouldn’t feel like you’re stepping into a series of large portacabins.

I visited an exhibition last December about these projects and the work & scale of the planning is incredibly fascinating.

I understand the rationale in favour… but would caution that in the examples cited like Germany etc, Grand Coalition’s haven’t stemmed support for the parties being locked out. If the coalition is seen as an "establishment stitch-up" without delivering for people, there’s a big risk there.

Regular reminder that, thanks to the Obama admin negotiating the Iran nuclear deal, the Iranian proliferation programme had been limited. Then Trump decided to break from that agreement in 2018, which led to Iran resuming its programme. Now he complains about Iranian nuclear proliferation.

A word to the wise, for those advocating new nuclear power plants in the UK. As we have seen in Ukraine, Iran and elsewhere, these are also sitting targets you’re creating.

The nuclear lobby got exactly what they wanted out of Reeves today. Tens of billions of ££ towards completely unnecessary plants which will do nothing to bring down the costs of energy to the consumer. It will line the pockets of the corporate nuclear sector though.

This really shouldn't be a surprise. UK is behind the curve compared to many countries - Iceland gives both parents equal paid parental leave. In Sweden each parent has 240 days (with 90 days non-transferrable, or 480 days if single parent) and 45 days can be transferred to a grandparent or friend!

Let’s be very clear; Scotland does NOT need nuclear power. Don’t let the lobbyists convince you otherwise. It is actually ridiculous in the extreme to suggest a country as energy-rich as Scotland requires nuclear. It doesn’t - end of story.

Good news

The Danish population crosses 6 million for the first time. With a falling birthrate, like many countries, it is largely immigration which has brought this growth, as well as an aging population overall.

Denmark’s EU presidency from July 2025 will focus on Ukraine, defence, and a more flexible budget policy. #europe #eu #denmark

I understand the argument for means-testing, but the rationale for universal provision is it captures a lot of people who otherwise fall through the cracks. Universal payments also answers the question folk always have when they pay taxes - 'what's in it for me?' - and reduces resentment.

A digital ID system is at least 15 years overdue. This should be universal for health records, banking, employment etc. When I changed address recently, only way I could edit this address at my GP practice was to physically go the practice & write it 🤷‍♂️ it’s a small example but seems odd in 2025

Think it’s kinda remarkable an entire Swiss town can be almost entirely buried under a collapsed glacier, yet receives very little chat or news coverage. Almost like a shrug of the shoulders instead. Weird, no?

Happy national day to all Swedish people!   🇸🇪 & 🇪🇺: On 1 January 2025, Sweden celebrated 30 years of EU membership!   For info about the Council in Swedish, check out → europa.eu/!mf9Dpd

There’s a fair bit of cynicism in the electorate atm. Folk don’t believe either of the parties will improve things, or tackle the big problems. Many feel politics is stuck in a doom loop of cuts to public services - where’s the investment that keeps being promised?

The public expression from the by-election, whatever else can be read in the result, is that without addressing the big problems head on in a meaningful sense, then the scunner factor will continue to be pervasive.

TLDR: It's doing pretty well economically, because structurally the Danish model of collective bargaining agreements, coupled with the flexicurity system and free education, have delivered high skills and high wages, supported with a reasonable social safety net. Oh, and Novo Nordisk.

Norway: the centre-right Conservative Party (H-EPP) fell to 13.9% in today's Opinion poll — the lowest polling result obtained by the party since 2009. If repeated in the next national parliament election, this would be the worst result in the party's 140-year history. ➤ europeelects.eu/norway

Norway, Opinion poll: Ap-S&D: 31% (+5) FrP~ECR: 20% (-4) H-EPP: 14% (-5) R~LEFT: 6% (+1) SV~LEFT: 6% (-1) V-RE: 5% Sp~RE: 5% KrF-EPP: 5% (+1) MDG-G/EFA: 4% (+1) +/- vs. 28 April-5 May 2025 Fieldwork: 26-31 May 2025 Sample size: 1,002 ➤ europeelects.eu/norway

The UK basic pension is £705 per month. Pensions in Norway increase this month by 3.7%, raising the corresponding pension to the equivalent of £1,520 per month.

RIP to the composer who was so essential to the texture of The Simpsons for over 20 years. i've enjoyed episodes since he left, but i can say without a doubt the background music is now terrible to the point of being distracting (it's shocking they don't even try to emulate Clausen's style)

Not that hard to see how organised state actors could influence an outcome tbh, given how easily open to manipulating Eurovision’s voting system is.

“A recent report found 80% of French people are in favour of the ban”

A good, powerful statement that Holyrood backed this unanimously. A smoke-free society in Scotland is possible if we have the ambition and determination to grasp it.

In @theguardian.com covers our focus group in Hamilton, Larkhall & Stonehouse ahead of the by election. What jumps out most (also in council by-elections & Scottish Parliament polls) Reform is seen as a more viable option in Scotland than Farages previous parties www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

The biggest difference is social mobility. The UK has MUCH more disparity between incomes vs that in the Nordics, Ireland etc, and it is less mobile as a society.

Well worth visit today on board the D/S Hestmanden, currently at Edinburgh as part of the historic Liberation Convoy to Scotland marking 80 years of VE. The ship survived both world wars and is the last remaining of the Nortraship fleet. It was converted to a museum ship residing at Kristiansand.

Trump writes this as if he’s the first person to notice these things about Putin. Like he’s only just turned on the news for the first time since 2022.

What’s interesting is that, currently at least, no party is seriously proposing to reform the Holyrood electoral system. Long overdue. The modified Webster method of PR would seem preferred.
