The NYTimes has been incredibly successful in their framing of this issue, as evidenced by all of the people in the comments saying with confidence that “science shows gender-affirming care doesn’t work.” Wanted to push back but comments closed.

I think the cover art really conveys that this is a book about the magic of reading. Thank you, design team! And the subtitle, "Key Routines for Engaging, Research-Informed Instruction in Grades 2-6" gives a hint that "engaging" is as important as "research-informed."

So in my book, I tried to show that research-based instruction IS exciting and beautiful. I tell lots of stories of kids and teachers sharing books, reading together, and loving the process of learning to read. These are joyful readers! They just happen to be learning with structured teaching.

For too long, research-informed instruction has been portrayed as dry and boring, while balanced lit is about the love of books. In fact, in Sold a Story, Lucy Calkins said that she didn't know of classrooms using the science of reading that were "exciting, and poignant and beautiful."

Many blue cities had death rates that approached European capitals due to their aggressive use of public health measures and high compliance rates. Yet we're in the middle of this bizarre wave of takes about how we all have to admit public health measures didn't work. Infuriating!

Every news show host needs an image of the graph from Trump's 1st term, showing economic indicators if Obama economic trajectory continued w/o change, vs. actual Trump econ (nearly the same.) There was no magic Trump economy!

Is it six episodes of the NY Times reflecting on how they got hoodwinked into reporting on a moral panic and then apologizing for their role in demonizing trans people. No? Then it seems unnecessary.

This seems more of an issue of how the test is used. It's not really meant for "accountability" but to show where kids are ready to go next. I'm sorry it's being used in that way.

How do you see MAP impacting equity? I find it allows me a greater ability to meet students’ needs and to see growth, especially for striving readers.

Yes! I have heard so many say being culturally responsive is an add-on to reading science, it’s too “political.” A) it’s also based in research, and B) ensuring every child is literate IS political. If it wasn’t, people wouldn’t fight it so hard.

That's amazing and gross. The kids will love it.

I teach 8-10 year olds. What's the oldest, weirdest, or grossest shark fact I could use to impress them?

Lots of folks on the left also support the science of reading, because we believe all children deserve the freedom of literacy. It’s a social justice issue for many.
