I found a Oriental Turtle Dove looking super sleepy and relaxed, so I waited for that perfect half-closed-eye moment — and nailed it!

On June 21, 1813, Laura Secord heard plans of a surprise American attack on the British at Beaver Dams. Wanting to warn the British, she began her famous journey through the wilderness. This is the story of Laura Secord's Walk. 🧵 1/10

Lots of American avocets this year, including this one sitting down in the middle of a gravel road. We thought it was a discarded shoe from a distance 😂 #yql #Alberta #birds #birding #shorebirds 🪶🇨🇦

Took most of the lab (some wanted to sleep in) out for early morning birding yesterday. As they are all international students (🇮🇹🇧🇷🇦🇪), a lot of lifers were spotted. Highlights were phalaropes, avocets, and owls. #Alberta #birding #yql #birds 🇨🇦

Who are those sweet slippery noodles with tiny eyes? Caecilians of course! 🥰 I imaged these limbless amphibs for #oVertTCN using #diceCT to enhance the contrast of the soft tissues. You can find the datasets on MorphoSource with the other diceCT amphibians: www.morphosource.org/projects/000... 🧪

This clip is interesting for a few reasons: 1. It shows their long, snaky neck. 2. It's an immature bird that's spending time at the rookery with nesting adults. 3. This young bird is starting to show some of its light blue feather crest Agami Heron #CostaRica #birds #herons

In remote forests of west Africa, wildlife traffickers are filling orders for hundreds of hornbill skulls. The bulbous-billed birds are protected in Asia, but conservationists now worry the market has shifted to African birds. My latest for @nautil.us nautil.us/the-hornbill...

Male Anna’s Hummingbirds ringed in Nanaimo yesterday. They certainly live up to the hype! 🇨🇦 #birdringing

Mama and baby great horned owls today! #Alberta #owls #birds #birding #wildlife 🪶

I will note that U Lethbridge was not included, possibly because campus does nothing to improve the environment, etc. Instead a lot of time mowing grass, killing ground squirrels and overwatering plants in a region prone to drought. #yql #Alberta www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

I had a great time at Middleton Island, Alaska, helping my MSc. student Abby Eaton conduct field respirometry on rhinoceros auklets as part of her thesis project at @mcmasteruniversity.bsky.social All birds handled with proper training and permits!

We need to do better when it comes to funding public education #abpoli #ableg

“Calgary, Canada, had the largest drop, down to No. 18 from No. 5. Worsening healthcare concerns & instability forced Canada's third-largest city from the top 10.” Huh. So gutting health care & enboldening separatism has consequences. #abpoli #cdnpoli www.businessinsider.com/world-best-c...

Here's a longer version of the Agami Heron courtship display, in full 4K! The males will literally do this display all day long. At first, I thought that these were males that couldn't get a date, but we've realized that it's new birds arriving at the rookery. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWqg...

You need this in your life. Sorry. I'm not one to tell people what to do, but you need this. 🪶 🐣

Lots of western painted turtles soaking up some sun at Elizabeth Hall Wetlands today. Possibly the easiest place to spot Alberta's only native turtle. #wildlife #Alberta #yql 🇨🇦

A reminder that I'm keen to chat with folks who might want to do a postdoc with me at the NHM node of @adriftlab.bsky.social. Contaminants, plastics, seabirds, conservation, extinction, islands... you name it!

It almost feels like cheating when a snipe sits atop a fence post and let's you photograph it from the car window. Er, I mean, I definitely donned camo and crouched in a buggy wetland for several hours for this shot... #birds #birdphotography

There are still some spaces available in my upcoming coloured pencil drawing course. It will be a relaxing few evenings bringing this warbler to life. 🌿🪶🎨 www.eventbrite.com/e/drawing-so...

Diversity is what drives scientific understanding. Scientists compare and contrast different species, behaviours, diseases. Diversity among scientists takes advantage of different life experiences, wiring of our brains, questioning our perceptions. Science dies when forced into conformity.

Australian friends! I'm going to be visiting Sydney in just over a week. I'll be at UNSW on June 23-25th and Macquarie on June 26-27th. I'd love to catch up with people in person, and also will be giving (at least) two talks at UNSW. The first is science-of-science modeling talk, on June 23:

Does my bum look big in this? A striated grasswren at Gluepot Reserve.

A great example of how vision is unimportant for feeding in some shorebirds. This marbled godwit has completely submerged its beak under water and into the mud and can cannot see its beak tip. It is entirely dependent on its sense of touch to capture food. #themoreyouknow #birds #ornithology 🪶🧪🇨🇦
