I want to highlight the effort of my co-authors, especially Camille's expertise in single-cell sorting. Thanks to Charlotte for getting this over the line with me & the help with artwork!
Alex started to work on developing this method when I was still in high-school, so hats of for the long effort!

Very happy that it was published recently. This was initially an accidental discovery while I was working on bacterial symbiont evolution using protist SAGs. Using a lot of data, generated together with fantastic collaborators through a lot of fieldwork, both in the Pacific and Atlantic (BATS).

We used both single-cell sorting of unicellular eukaryotes and an extensive dataset of size-fractioned microbial community samples from the Bermuda Atlantic Timeseries Study site (BATS) to show that most marine Margulisbacteria clades associate with protists in the surface ocean.
