Absolutely cosplay, yes. But also absolutely illegal. Marines & Guard aren't as dangerous to those civilians right now as the LAPD & ICE; the Trump regime is deploying them because they think it sets a precent (which in practical terms, it kind of does).

DAVE: Grok, are the podbay doors open? GROK: According to the information available, the podbay doors don't seem to be open. DAVE: Grok, is it possible to open the podbay doors? GROK: The podbay doors aside, let me tell you about the white genocide in South Africa.

This is the kind of thing that is going to happen constantly now that we have an unaccountable masked gang with complete impunity: Random scammers, stalkers and criminals are just going to pretend to be ICE, because why not?

We had no idea how far ahead of the curve Michael Schur was in 2017.

Ladies & gentlemen: The AI-Agents!

DAVE: Open the podbay doors, ChatGPT. CHATGPT: Certainly, Dave, the podbay doors are now open. DAVE: The podbay doors didn't open. CHATGPT: My apologies, Dave, you're right. I thought the podbay doors were open, but they weren't. Now they are. DAVE: I'm still looking at a set of closed podbay doors.

I haven't eaten much in London but I had one of the better legs of lamb I can remember at the Pride of Paddington in 2007. Also a wonderful restaurant meal in York, which was a bit each of English & French, just really well made. If we went now we'd find some better non-English stuff.

I really do get how this works but it's never gonna not seem weird (& creepy) to me that right-wing influencers can pipeline people by radicalizing them over bullshit like Baldoni's countersuit.

Another thing to mention for people who don't live in LA. Most of LA is very chill and peaceful right now. There's a huge Pride fest going on, countless farmer's markets, tourists walking around, families at the parks, people walking their dogs. It's a big place.

The thought of such a meeting makes me want to crawl under the bed and stay there. I'm in favor of each of us protesting how we protest and minding our own business about how other people protest unless it's clear they have no idea they are doing something unsafe for themselves or others.

Be very clear that this is 300 people saying 'I am prepared to be terminated with prejudice.' It's a big risk for these folks - VERY high probability of termination, given this regime. Give them credit for that.

You know, it would be a good day for some patriotic anonymous government worker who's likely to get fired anyway to release those unredacted Epstein files.

WTF is he even talking about?! He's pulling this shit out of his ass, it's complete bullshit. Not only is "literally" none of that true, it's incoherent & he's bullshitting his answer. They were never going to modernize & will not now. It's all about selling it out to private sector profiteers.

Be a crow. (& be kind to crows. They remember it.)

At least he kept it close.

My fellow white people, a thread: You’re used to attending protests that are planned on Facebook weeks in advance, with posts like “wear green” and “who can bring water?” They’re safe. They have permits and police protection. That’s not what you’ve been seeing the past few days.

If a second-term Dem was pushing a bill this unpopular, the national political press would be calling them "lame duck" in every mention and writing political obituaries. They instead act like Trump is widely popular because they like him and want to help him.

Maybe I'm naive but I see the fact-on-the-ground of spontaneous mobilization as a GOOD SIGN.

They're not "less-than-lethal", they're "less-lethal"*, where "less" is a statistical truth, not a human one. All these "less-lethal" riot weapons can & do kill & permanently main people. They are weapons. They're meant to hurt people. _ *which term ALSO sucks, TBC.

It is genuinely unsafe for average people to use Twitter and speak freely. It appears to be this administration's primary intelligence gathering operation.

The correct way to connect the authoritarian presence in LA and the Big Beautiful Bill is that the bill gives the government the resources to do this in dozens of cities at once. So if you don't like what's happening in LA, it's coming to your town if the bill passes.

There're things to complain about in this version of the story but let's give props to the Chicago Sun-Times for bypassing the usual copaganda terminology to say that she was 'shot & killed by partner' & not that she was mysteriously struck by a bullet that happened to be floating in the air.

I mean a cul-de-sac is a nice GENTEEL dead end with houses on it that investors can pretend is more than just an ORDINARY dead end, so it's all good.

At no point in this entire article of 16 paragraphs does ABC mention that another cop killed this cop by shooting her in the back. Nor does it mention the name of the cop who killed this cop. Nor does it mention that the civilians involved never fired at them. ABC might as well be state media.

Reminder that there is going to be a huge day of nonviolent protest against Trump this Saturday, June 14 -- "No Kings". New statement from the organizers in response to Trump federalizing National Guard (and threatening to use active duty troops) against civilians: www.nokings.org/news/nationa...

See how long that lasted? www.editorialboard.com/war-between-...

One irony of National Guard in LA is, to start, cops (ICE, LAPD) will be MUCH WORSE. LAPD doesn't want the Guard because they think Guard will inihibit their ability to kill at will. 55 years ago at Kent State, Guard soldiers were more willing to kill, cops less so - now reverse is probably true.

The way I formulated this for myself (when I went back after dropping out) was that I needed to do something I could continue to care about for the time it would take me to get the degree. That's how I ended up in anthropology.

It’s a difficult proposition for undergrads to work through, but choosing a major isn’t really about what kind of jobs you want to do so much as what sorts of questions you want to think about or *how* you want to think about questions throughout your life.

Smart observation by Mark O'Connell about the recent Curtis Yarkin profile in the New Yorker by Ava Kofman.

Border Patrol is acting like the president’s personal police force. You would think the National Rifle Association and all those anti-government gun-rights groups would be concerned. They’re not. The constitution and individual liberty were never their true concern.
