but yeah... I remember switching from IRC to ICQ to TS, Mubmle, Skype and such... to end up at Discord... *trying* to switch people to Guilded... and people not really moving.

I doubt they will lock *currently* free options behind a paywall.
but you can expect no new "features" to be free.
it's mostly bloat that you cannot disable without modification anyway. newest BS is "user-card-backgrounds" in the user-list and DM-backgrounds... just... bloat.

also funny thing: Revolt switched to the user#1234 style of usernames once Discord abandoned it for the "unique" username BS.
the old Discord / current Revolt system is much better than just having "unique", lowercase, usernames...

Revolt is completely open source so you can even set up your own backend. (fun thing, Andrew Tate's BS academy thing was based on an old version of Revolt - which is why it was hacked so easily... they never updated to fix exploits)
It is missing e.g. streaming.

Roblox bought Guilded some time ago and forced a Roblox account for login about a year or so ago.
It *was* a really good alternative. even having some channel-types that Discord clearly copied 1:1 in the last few years...
it's kind of dead since bot-devs abandoned it after the Roblox acc force.

TS still has you connecting to a single server at a time iirc...
Guilded is the most "complete" alternative, if you don't mind the (idiotic) forced Roblox account login.
Revolt is the most future-promising but currently very lacking alternative.
neither will work cause people are too entrenched.

3) it's a web-app... so even if the modded clients disappear I can just use a separate browser and remove their annoying bloat via CSS.

I am just glad that...
1) you can't quickly change the backend. you can add to it but changing older requests is harder. which is why I can still use client version 126.21 on Android. Modded via Aliucord for username-compat.
2) there are mods for the desktop client. I recommend Vesktop / Vencord.

there sadly isn't much of an alternative - and they know it.
Guilded got bought by Roblox and forces a Roblox account.
Revolt is developing super slowly.
Teamspeak is a much different user experience.
