Very smart, high ROI initiative from the Spencer Foundation. Providing bridge funding for canceled NSF grants: 1) directs funds to projects already screened by a top-noch review process. 2) avoids imposing proposal prep costs on researchers. 3) ameliorates the disruption from GOP sabotage.

Free park passes for all 4th graders and their families!

We don’t always know what questions will change the world. But public science has a way of answering them anyway. Federal science funding isn’t just lines in a budget. It’s a vote for progress, for possibility. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/16/s...

say it again: 4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities ROI for NIH and NSF for local economies is conservatively 4x, often close to 10x demolishing higher education is economic sabotage

If the plane is a gift to the US Government then it stays with the government. If it’s a gift to Trump that he keeps then it’s a bribe. Those are the only two options folks.

Without basic science, there is nothing to translate.

✅ ACTION ITEM ✅ The National Science Foundation is under attack. Trump’s budget is moving to dismantle one of the great engines of U.S. innovation, education, and discovery. The fight to save NSF is on—and now there’s a new home base to join the front lines (🧵 1/3): www.savensf.com

A great thread describing what PTSD feels like. Useful info for anyone who wants to know how to help someone (today or in the future) experiencing PTSD.

Democrats have been so successful in building a working government people take it for granted, which pretty much explains how they could vote for Trump but not believe he would do what he said he would do

Job opening here at Western, which is a great place to work!

Fantasy vs reality. Everything costs more now in the US.

The Spencer Foundation is offering rapid response bridge funding for those who lost NSF research grants. www.spencer.org/grant_types/...

BREAKING: NSF has frozen all grant funding, as of yesterday. It's unclear when they will resume funding awards, or why the pause has been put in place. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

This is great stuff for a genetics class!

ATTENTION: NSF GRANT RECIPIENTS We received a heads up from a trusted source that you should proactively download/print/screen shot any documentation on research.gov pertaining to your NSF awards, both those that are current and any that have closed in the last 5-6 years. 1/n

NBC News: A federal judge just issued a final judgement and permanent injunction against the Trump admin — ruling that the National Institutes of Health must continue funding research grants at their original, full amounts.  @msnbc.com

It is the single largest two-day stock market loss in history. Trump has now caused $10 trillion in wealth destruction, with half of that happening in the last 48 hours. Trump is golfing.

I would totally buy this.

It’s still not amazing, but we’ve succeeded in averting the wort-case climate scenario, and that’s encouraging. See below thread for receipts.

The incompetence is astounding. But of course nobody will be fired because none of them are leading an NIH grant trying to cure cancer.

As in all things in life, an absolutist stance is hard to implement, for a diversity of reasons. But (1) Submitting first to society-owned journals, and (2) Broadening the tier of impact within which you prioritize society-owned journals for your submissions can make a huge difference.

Canada Post vibes.

The public really needs to understand this. Every university system in the world rests on public funding, there has never been an alternative model at any time in history. We have universities for literally the same reason that we have roads and armies.

This thesis “anti-acknowledgement” is definitely worth a read.

Thanks for the excellent piece @ljevanso.bsky.social & to all for sharing their experiences & expertise including @flybehaviour.bsky.social (I still need to find the other women researchers who contributed & follow them here, too!) Today is my late husband's birthday. He would have been 55 today. I know there are much larger issues in the world than my corner of grief, but I wanted to honor his memory today, because his memory is indeed a blessing.

At this point, many of us have seen our former students, our friends, our colleagues, lose their jobs without just cause. Science, public health, public safety, air safety, fire control, and far more, are being undermined. So, what can YOU do, right now? What can academic societies do? ... we can...

Mostly preaching to the choir here, but a group of us moderators over on Reddit's AskScience put together kind of an explainer for the implications of some of the attacks on science funding and infrastructure in the US if it's useful for anyone else to share:

I am getting such petty joy from Canadians boo-ing the US national anthem.
