My favorite Buddhist hungry ghost image. Insatiable in their desires, hungry ghosts wander the world for aeons bothering humans and must be placated through ritual offerings. Being reborn as a hungry ghost is not a desirable rebirth, to say the least.

That would be interesting I'd imagine at the museum there they'd have a model or drawing of the site. But a VR reconstruction would be so interesting

This site looks amazing. It makes me want to visit it myself. The reliefs are incredible! This was no second-rate sacred stupa.

Still good to keep a copy of the Lotus Sutra around. According to the text, just having it in your possession is good karma and may lead to a better rebirth. Every place it rests becomes a pure land. You never know 🤷

James said you did a great job! Said it made him want to read the book.

Accounts of the early history are most likely not historical events as much as attempts to legitimize by later generations. Here, Lopez is using the historical reference from the texts to illustrate change and variation. There are still a lot of holes in the history of early buddhism.

Follow my feed. I don't post any new age stuff. Tricycle publishes lots of heady Buddhist think pieces and history. I post accessible links daily.

I'm not sure where you are looking, but there are many major university presses churning out rigorous academic studies on Buddhism. Been going on for decades.

This is a gross misreading of Buddhist teachings
