"the government wants you to be violent don't give them what they want!!!!" pretty sure the government wants you talking shit on the world wide web about people actually fighting back but yeah go off

Opuntia blooms on the one individual growing on one sun-baked rock on Mizzou's campus

Wholly agree with this. LLMs are an extraordinary technical achievement, but they're like dynamite: You can use them for a bunch of different things, but you might not like the collateral damage when you use them for tasks they're not suited to.

Why Socialism? by Albert Einstein monthlyreview.org/2009/05/01/w...

This is what an authoritarian regime would do. Hidden deep in Trump’s 1,100-page bill that passed the House today is a provision that would block federal courts from enforcing contempt charges against government officials who violate court orders.

Unreal. The Trump administration is disappearing migrants to places that aren't even their origin countries, then refusing to say which countries they were sent to by claiming this is "classified," then refusing to say *why* the info is classified:

At least 27 are dead in Missouri in Kentucky after severe weather alerts were delayed overnight because of DOGE cuts. www.mesoscalenews.com/p/tornado-wa...

This is insane. Republicans have inserted language into the budget reconciliation bill that would ban states from regulating AI in any capacity for 10 years. from @404media.co www.404media.co/republicans-...

The Trump administration is exploring plans to suspend habeas corpus rights for immigrants, one of the most fundamental protections in the Constitution.

Global temperature categories for April 2025. For land areas, it was the warmest April on record. Only 11% of land is in a shade of blue while 62% is in a shade of red.

The proposed Trump budget is brutal, unless you’re the military or Homeland Security. Here’s what gets cut: - State Department: -84% - National Science Foundation: -56% - EPA: -54% - HUD (housing): -44% - Labor: -35% - Interior: -30% - Health & Human Services: -26% - NASA: -24% - Education: -15%

From a hydrologic risk perspective, these new mass cuts at USGS would further compound broadening NOAA National Weather Service personnel/capability losses when it comes to quantifying and predicting real-time flood risk (among other things).

Happy May 1st. The value of your labor belongs to you and the actions of the state are best understood as as a coordinated effort to distract you from this. The state fears an organized and unified proletariat like it fears death and rightly so. Power to the workers and power to the people

Yet another update on the total planetary f&%kery that's taking place. The two-year running average for the global surface temperature anomaly will soon break 1.60°C. The Climate Casino is giving an Over/Under date of May 15th. Are you distracted?

Hundreds of terabytes of NOAA datasets are about to be deleted. Not just climate data, but a ton of vital Earth science, coastline, sea level, gravity mapping, and oceanographic data. Downloads are slow! Get what you need, and work with the greater community to export and back up the rest!

This is it people. This is the moment of the camps.

Found my first flowering shooting stars of the year this weekend. They grow from a large curved bluff of limestone, contrasting the habitats I otherwise find them in, shaded forest floors (both more bottomland slopes and more mesic ridges). Will be checking on my other spots this week!

This is right. The fact that they’re doing this to “innocent people” is not irrelevant, but it’s ultimately not the point. People convicted of crimes have rights too. And you can be damn sure that if they want to convict them - or me, or you - of something, they will.

If the Supreme Court decides that the government can "erroneously" disappear you off the street to a foreign torture prison, and that federal courts have no power to do anything about it, that is, in a meaningful way, Pretty Much It www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/24...

🚨 SCOOP 🚨 DHS is asking IRS to locate **7 MILLION** suspected undocumented immigrants using confidential tax records. It’s a massive escalation by DHS to use the tax system for mass deportation. IRS officials are aghast, say it’s likely illegal.

Decades from now, people will pay trillions of dollars every year to get back to the climate that we have today.

Found a weeeird individual of Sceptridium dissectum (pic 1) that seems like they could be a hybrid between the fern's two forms, f. obliquum (pic 2) and f. dissectum (pic 3). Never seen anything like this!

Q: Have winter (Dec-Feb) temperatures have changed (trend) over the last 85 years? A: F*ck

Great loss. My transition of study from physics to stream ecology leaned heavily on an excellent REU program with the Rosemond lab. These experiences can strongly shape, make or break, a continued pathway in scientific education.

Breaking News! Code Yikes! February is now complete, and recorded an average monthly temperature anomaly of 1.60°C above the 1850-1900 IPCC pre-industrial baseline. This ranked 3rd hottest February on record, behind 2016 (1.64°C) and 2024 (1.78°C), which were both El Nino years.

I think a lot about how almost every species that's ever lived has not been (adequately) preserved in the fossil record. We'll never know more than only a fraction of all biodiversity of the past

Civility politics only help the oppressor maintain power. If you are demanding civility in a fight against fascists you are already on the wrong side.

Criminal conditions in St. Louis's Coldwater Creek. 0.00 mg/L dissolved oxygen, 0.0% DO saturation, high conductivity, and, undetected by these sensors, radioactivity from uranium waste dumped here during the Manhattan Project. No living aquatic life observed anywhere in the stream yet.

The National Weather Service took more than 150 years to build. Forget flight or the internet or whatever - public-service systems like this are the marvels of the modern world. Conceptual cathedrals, constructed across generations and dedicated to the public good.

The global mean surface temperature for Feb. 25, 2025 was more than 1.7°C above the 1850-1900 IPCC pre-industrial average. The day was hotter globally than every Feb. 25th on record since 1940 with the exception of Feb. 25, 2016. And this is happening in a La Nina year.

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

Another word for "regulation" is... "consumer protection" "environmental protection" "Regulation" means your milk is safe. "Regulation" means toys that harm your babies are removed from the shelves. "Regulation" means chemical companies can't dump waste in your river.

Every time we have a substantial snow forecasted and I have time off work, I try to make it into the Icebox to capture shots of the snow falling through the crack in the cave's ceiling. Today was finally a successful attempt. Bonus shot of the park's eponymous rock bridge. Love this place.

Meta illegaly downloaded 80+ terabytes of books from LibGen, Anna's Archive, and Z-library to train their AI models. In 2010, Aaron Swartz downloaded only 70 GBs of articles from JSTOR (0.0875% of Meta). Faced $1 million in fine and 35 years in jail. Took his own life in 2013.

The U.S. #NationalWeatherService, housed within #NOAA, is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. It costs only ~$3/yr per taxpayer, & yields ~10:1 return on investment--saving economy 10s-100s of billions, not to mention thousands of lives.
