R.F. Kuang's The Poppy War is ruthless and relentless. Just when you think it's safe to peek (and breathe), another horror comes along. The world- and myth-building is amazing -- tightly constructed yet rewoven with new perspectives. The lack of humanity parallels contemporary history.

Wonton update! She's totally healed! Casts, buttons, and feeding tube were removed and her fur has grown back! Also, she really likes toys 😻😸

I was washing the dishes, and the gray kitten jumped up my back and crawled onto my shoulders. She draped her front paws and head on my left side, and she put her back legs on my right side. She kept her balance pretty well for a few minutes.
