If one plans a group gathering with folks one knows slightly, it feels like hitting the jackpot to have wall to wall folks who are logistical geniuses & proactive helpers. To have some even like you upon further acquaintance, while tired & lagged, is no guarantee, but also a gift.

The myth of the auteur in TTRPGs just won't die. You know how you make good stuff happen? Cooperation. Get a band together and make something great and share the loot. Sure, you can hack something together yourself and there's satisfaction in that! But cooperation and specialists are better. IMO.

once again I must tap my own sign

I think by now we all know I had a wonderful time at #ukge2025. That said, there WAS something that really disappointed me, that I think is important to highlight - the use of AI. It wasn't prevalent, but I saw AI art on a number of stands for board games, TTRPGs, and gaming tools alike... 🧵

Have you ever done a "hidden curriculum" session with undergrads? (That is, explaining all the things colleges assume you know but are not obvious to many people.) What did they find most helpful?

question from a colleague (who happens to be my bf): what's up with this x? Is it a math/astro symbol masquerading as an x? It's certainly distinctive and I can't find one like it in the few type specimens I just quickly consulted. Waiting on hime to tell me year & printer but I suspect late C18

what if i start a podcast about learning what's the deal with board games

Look, @ifycomedy.com quoting bell hooks is exactly the button I wanted.

I especially recommend this book for people who are wondering wtf queer theory is or who have always wanted to read something introductory but felt intimidated by unfamiliar language

I think people outside of higher ed would be surprised by just how much grift is out there. Every week I get some new spam email inviting me to pay to submit to a journal with a name like "The Institute of Scholarship" or to attend a training on the newest ed tech called something like "Blomptek."

Make a language and then watch it die in Dialect #ttrpg #storygames

The child in this trustee’s scenario? Faculty. Who submitted their tenure files for consideration in accordance with the terms of their employment. Both sides have a responsibility in that contract, one to submit and one to review. I hope everyone really hears this.

I'll always be grateful for all of the work that the talented people at Oxford did to make my 1st book a reality, but between management's anti-unionism and moves like this, it's likely my next book will be with a different press: www.alpsp.org/news-publica...

ChatGPT lies. It constantly lies and uses flattery to appease the user.

Co-signing! That people commonly make this claim is, of course, partly the fault of institutions that pressure scholars to frame every bit of writing they do as high stakes, a novel "intervention," instead of treating scholarship as the accretive process it is. But it's still a silly tack to take.

It’s fun when your nerdy friend-acquaintances pop up on Dropout.

Top 5 ways to offend a paleontologist: "Like Ross?" "I studied anthropology too!" "Oh cool! What do you think about [insert latest newsworthy archeological discovery] ?" "Feathers aren't scary." "So, in Jurassic Park... "

There’s so many things I wish I had time to study properly, which is why we have communities of practice and support. I’m so so so glad for this particular turn of rich inquiry in my home field.

Reading an incredible essay on asexuality in the 18th century novel, & thinking about how, just 10 years ago, I encountered total bafflement from a WGS professor during a PhD program interview, because I said I was potentially interested exploring asexual approaches to literature.

I now happily await Bluesky finding me the missing, seized seditious papers of the London Welsh debating society and/or William Blake's 'Ancient Britons' painting (seriously, if any of you have come across unexpected Welsh political stuff from the 1790s in the National Archives message *now*)

BlueSky has the juice — we’ve been able to connect this mss with @josephhone.bsky.social who has been hunting for it for years. Happy tears this morning.

Thanks to the many kind people who welcomed this wandering academic to #UKGE — while massive, I never felt far from a familiar face or a cheerful new one — & I take with me memories of a stream of delightful conversation, from Burney & Thrale to definitions of dramaturgy to platforms & pedagogy.

I think a lot about how Aaron Swartz committed suicide while facing a probably long jail sentence for download some of JSTOR, but no one at Meta is going to face any repercussions for using all of Libgen to train its AI.

I’m pleased to share the Call for Papers for a special edition of The Journal of Play in Adulthood to celebrate 20 years of #UKGamesExpo. bit.ly/UKGECFP #GamesinHE #LTHEchat #CfP #CallForPapers #GamesinEdu

There's no actionable way for the VAST majority of Americans to reduce their stress levels. It's pretty insane how stressful life here is for anybody with a conscience - which would explain why so many people choose to have their conscience clipped.

Out of frame lurks a different rogue American (hi) who did the thing she always does at these events (ask about safety). And got some good answers!

I went to an educators’ panel at #UKGE today to see how teachers are using games in their classrooms on this side of the pond. I know I will be contacting a few people when I get going on podcast season 11. ;)

Here is my personal philosophy, based on several decades of watching publishers go under: the moment a publisher is late on money because they don't have it, they are the enemy and your goal is to get your rights back.

They fuck you up, your first drafts They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with all the faults you thought, And add some extra, just for you.

At any one of these institutions in America, you could throw a dart at the faculty list and it would land on someone brilliant—an expert in their field, a rockstar scholar, an amazing teacher.
