Everybody matters. Everybody matters. But if you are trying to give people something they can do to have a sense of purpose, if they lack one, I don’t think the answer is “labor force participation” in and of itself. The answer is “being of service,” which takes many forms.

Libraries work on the the idea of the commons. We don’t all have to own a book—bought or pirated. We can have collective things and share them. Libraries are also third spaces for organizations and community building. You can introduce children to the beauty of literature in a library.

Seconding this. It’s like graduate mentoring awards that only focus on the folks who directly supervise, rather than the many folks who do it for no credit while working at undergraduate institutions.
